Daegmund may have been part of the Palace Guard, but seeing as he was only a Six, he wasn't deemed near enough high-ranking to do something as prestigous as, say, guard anything anywhere close to the front gate. Or even a gate at all. The front gate, at least, was reserved for those who were an Eight or higher, and though that was only two ranks above him, it was still, sadly, two ranks above him. He really didn't mind, though. Yes, he was currently of comparatively low rank, and thus stuck pacing the walls of the Palace, the traditional sash that marked a member of the Guard threaded between the first two spikes across his back. Yes, the higher-ranked members were getting all of the attention where they were, up in the front to greet all of the important visitors who came through, being seen at their posts in this Court of fighters. No, he couldn't even wield the daggers he'd longed after, not yet at least - he was only a mouse with his Animal form, and had no hands of any sort to make things easier. But that didn't mean he wasn't planning on making things better. He was just going to take his time and plan things out, because nothing would happen the way he wanted it to if he was unduly impetuous. When a noble crossed his path, several feet ahead of him, he stopped and bowed gracefully, as befit them. The sneer he recieved in turn was ignored with long practice - he was only a small mouse, after all, and nothing that seemed particularly threatening. Their opinion didn't really matter to him, though. All that mattered was doing what he could, and if it earned him a few jeers and sneers on the way, then so be it. He wasn't a prideful Highlander.

The sound of bickering started off as a softer, distant sound, but it was definitely growing louder and definitely heading towards the little mouse's post. As the conversation grew more distinct, the Palace Guard would be able to make out the words and probably begin to notice something a little strange. "Well, after he said that, he told me that you were his new best friend." "I wouldn't say best friend." The tones alternated from confiding and amused to arrogantly condescending. "Oh? How would you describe that relationship?" A slight pause before the answer came, the words steadily growing louder. "He's a tool." A low laugh interrupted by a third voice, a bit lower and definitely not amused. "Shut up, Ira." "Awww, wot's wrong, Se?" Two boys came into view, one fully equine with a smirking visage, the other a canine/equine mix with wings who definitely did not look amused. "Not happy with Eir's recent attentions?"

The sound of bickering voices caught the mouse's attention, and he turned his head up to catch the sight of a rather...odd pair rounding the corner toward where he was pacing, both of them obvious mixes of some sort. They were both equine, though the yellow one - was that Yarrow coloring? - had something with paws and a tail in the family tree. And the markings made him think of the Marsh, though the strange marking beneath the eye of the full equine was just odd. Oh well, they were both Hearts, and both higher-ranked than he, and so he bowed his head a bit as they approached, obviously on a path that would take them right past him. He hoped.
There was no need for a pair like that to interest themselves in a mere guard-mouse, after all, even if they did make him think of the odd toughs that liked to roam the Court and make nuisances of themselves for the Guard. Just to be on the safe side, he murmured a quiet, "My lords, as they passed, bowing his head distinctly, because it was always best for a Six like him to seem as if he wasn't really a threat. Because he wasn't - not yet, at least.

Despite the three voices, only the pair of boys were making an appearance now. Of course, on second thought, the first two -had- sounded rather similar; almost as though one person had been playing both parts. With the wild grinning of the full equine child, that would not be overly hard to imagine.
The pair drew close to the spike-backed mouse, their reactions to his presence completely different. The hybrid ignored the mouse completely; words directed at them or not. He seemed to have every ounce of prejudice and arrogance that Daegmund had come to expect of the Face Cards.
The Josiggy Marsh equine, however, stopped in front of the mouse, with a calm flick of his tail and a wide grin. Ooh, this one smelled -yummy-. Still, he had a distinct 'no eating people at the Courts' rule, simply because it would make things too hard later.
"Well, hello," Ira greeted the guard cheerily. He called to the other boy, "Hold up, Se, he might be able to help."
Se turned, a sneer evident across his face. "He's a Six and he's from the Range. There's only one way he could be less useful."
Ira ignored his youngest brother's prattle to grin at the mouse again.

Daegmund held quite still as he looked at the pair of young Jacks, stopping calmly as Ira addressed him to look at the pair with his pale blue eyes; they were disconcerting, yes, and it was quite obvious - at least in the attitude of the one - that he would not be getting out of this situation without at least a little bit of trouble.
"How can I help you, your Excellencies?" Polite was always best when dealing with anyone in the Court of Hearts, though if they were only a few ranks above him he would afford them a "sir" or "ma'am" rather than "lord" or "lady." And if they were a face card, well...there were titles for that, even if they weren't necessarily titled members of the Court. It was polite, and it generally kept them off of his back. Unless, such as these two (or really, just one of the two) they went out of their way to bother him.
He really wasn't sure that he trusted the equine's grin. Something about it was...distinctly unsettling.

"You're such a douchebag, Ira," Se announced calmly, turning as though he would simply walk off now.
The equine moved suddenly, in flow of predatory grace entirely not in keeping with his herbivore exterior. He pounced his younger brother easily, pinning the yellow hybrid before turning his head to face towards the mouse again. "We're not officially in the Courts yet.... wot's your name?" He liked mice. Even if he'd never tried one before. Daddy Aderlass was very cool.
"Get off of me!" Se growled from beneath his eldest brother, wings flopping rather useless against the floor in an ungraceful heap.
Bother, Se was such a hassle sometimes. Ira thumped Se one on the head with a golden hoof. The mixed region hybrid gave a cry of pain, but fell still. Here's hoping Ira hadn't accidentally killed his youngest brother. Mother would be displeased. Again.

The predatory body language that the equine exibited was...unexpected. Horses weren't generally predators, though he knew that many of them enjoyed hunting and fighting, at least if they had their Bipedal forms and were capable of using weapons, but... It was odd.
"I am Guardsman Daegmund, your Excellence," he replied calmly. The pair might not be in the Courts yet, but there was still that "yet" to contend with, and he had no qualms about addressing them with titles that they might not have officially earned...yet. He was still low on the totem pole, and it was best for him to stay mindful of that.
When the one proceeded to crack the other - were they siblings? they didn't quite look it - across the head, he couldn't help his own reflexive flinch, as well as the careful once-over he gave the winged boy to make sure that he wasn't injured. Or not injured badly, at least. He only knew a rudimentary amount of first aid, after all.

"I am NOT 'your Excellence," Ira replied firmly, lavender eyes shooting the mouse a warning look. "I am Ira." Despite not being in the Courts, he certainly acted like one with authority. There was also a subtle hint to the inflections of the words, as though Ira would not hesitate to clock Daegmund one as well should he not obey the unspoken injunction to just call the colt by his name.
His ears tilted sideways as the Range mouse began to eye Se a bit worriedly. "Don't worry, he's got a hard head. He probably didn't even feel it." Ira seemed to have already forgotten the cry of pain they had both heard from the hybrid. "Actually, we had a question for you."
A sudden roar of rage came from the yellow mix, and Se suddenly tried to rise up and buck his brother off. Ira seemed absolutely oblivious to these efforts; he raised the level of his voice to be heard over Se's struggles.
"Have you seen any dead bodies today?"

Ah, so that was what he meant when he'd emphasized that they weren't yet part of the Courts - a desire for no titles at all. On the other hand, the sheer attitude indicated that, when he did join the Courts, he would slip into them with a minimum of fuss and trouble - or maybe a lot of fuss and trouble, if he decided to do his best to make waves.
"My apologies, Ira," he said calmly, dipping his head slightly in a bit of a bow with the apology.
The reassurance about the other boy did help him to settle down a bit, but unlike Ira, he hadn't forgotten that cry of pain, and so his worry didn't fade entirely. Then there was a roar of rage from the hybrid, which caused him to flinch once again, though he didn't jerk back as he wanted to.
But...dead bodies? His only outward reaction was to blink once at that, following Ira's example and not paying too much attention to the yellow boy.
"Ah...no, I don't believe so. Are you looking for any particular dead bodies?"

"Just any that are particularly dead," Ira replied brightly, even as his body bumped upwards into the air from a hard kick from Se. The winged hybrid was cussing now, just a steady storm of profanity. Ira seemed amused.
"I think Eir's been here," the colt mused almost absently, when Se gave a sudden twist. Ira flew to one side and the hybrid was up on his feet and leaping angrily at his eldest brother in the next heartbeat.
A low laugh penetrated the sounds of the ensuing scuffle, and after a moment, it might become apparent to the guardsman that it was coming from the little equine.
In just a few minutes, Se had been trounced again, and Ira languidly sat atop his brother again. The hybrid's ears were flattened against his skull in ill grace at his loss, but Ira, again, seemed to be completely unaware. Ira paid attention to only wot he wished to.
"Do you have any ideas where we could find some corpses, Daegmund?" Despite the distraction of his brother, Ira had not forgotten the Six's name.
