The little illegitimate woman-spawn stared at him and Eir would have snarled at her again but for the close attention of his father. He had to put on his mask for now. So the yearling male ignored the demon-reject in lieu of sending the Queen of Hearts an innocent look.
"Me? Kill anyone? Don't be absurd, Father; why would I do something as ridiculous as that? I have no reason to kill anyone--" The barest of pauses emphasized these words, though perhaps in the entirely wrong way. "Much less someone here in the Palace. That just doesn't seem like a wise decision. Does it. Father." The challenge was back to his tone and Eir had to innocently look away to try and get his voice back under control. He turned smoothly as Thalia introduced her friend and sent Tosiek a bright and utterly insincere smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Tosiek."

Rai's ears flattened against his head and he forced himself to stand still and calm as he collected his thoughts and just kept breathing. It was very important to continue to breathe.
Ira and Eir had some sort of link between them and Rai had a nasty feeling he might know just wot it was. Nevertheless, the two boys could not be further from each other had they been born to different parents. Ira had himself fully under control and even in his wildest moments, Rai was almost positive that Ira was still fully aware of wot he was doing. Eir, on the other hoof, pretended constantly to be in control, but Rai just had a feeling that the boy was always just on the verge of utterly losing it.
Rai frowned at his son as Eir purposefully turned away from him in wot could almost be seen as a sign of surrender. He didn't think it was, but he let them be distracted for now.
"Greetings, Tosiek. Welcome to the Court of Hearts." He paused as he really looked at the bird hybrid. There was no way. . . "Who is your father? I believe I know him. . . "

Tosiek's ears went back as he noticed Thalia's unease around her half-brother and when the other boy turned to look at him, he couldn't help retreating back a partial step. His wings tightened along his back and he tried to decide just wot it was that was so unnerving about the equine.
Eir must be Yarrow Gardens, despite his blatantly Josiggy Marsh father, but there was no sign of subservience to women in his gaze. Aha, that's wot it was. Eir stared at him like he was some sort of rare treat and that sent Tosiek's fur rising in slow terror.
Nevertheless, the Queen of Hearts was able to break the frozen hold on his mind with his one simple question and the avian hybrid swiftly responded so Thalia would not. "My father? I don't know, actually. He died when I was very young. My mother tried to raise me on her own, but, alas, she recently succumbed to a strange, wasting sickness."

Thalia sent Tosiek a bewildered look. Why in the world would he--oh. Ooooh. He was doing that thing again. Okay. For some reason, her friend seemed to despise his parents and habitually told people that they were dead or something, so he could get adopted. She didn't know whether to contradict him--lying to Queen Rai seemed weird and like a thing she shouldn't do--or just roll with it. She decided to roll. There was no harm in it, really.
Unless her brother caught the lie and decided to eat them for their shameless mendacity.
"It was very tragic," she said, and for once managed to look like the picture of melancholy. It was not difficult to look sad when her face was in so much pain. She really would need to ask about the ice sometime soon. "He wept for days. He doesn't like to talk about it."

Pandying to a lowly Seven of Diamonds. His father was an absolute waste of space. It was no wonder Rai hadn't killed anyone to achieve The Queenship; the man could never have made it up here all on his own. It had taken an assassin to give him his role and Eir was completely unsurprised.
If he'd even cared slightly more about the Court, he would kill his father out of sheer protest.
Fortunately for Rai, however, Eir didn't want to be captured by the political web; there were far too many people here who would gladly conspire together to kill him out of hand. While he might glory in a good killing spree, he knew that the likelihood of him surviving an attack on the elite of the Court was slim to none and it wasn't worth it when there were still so very many other Cards just waiting to be eaten. No, he was going to continue to avoid this place as much as possible.

Rai ignored his son's rather evil stares, instead concentrating on the pair of children that he was fairly certain were lying to him. Really, he had almost believed Tosiek up until Thalia had jumped in. She was prone to the dramatics, but something about her expression and then Tosiek's made the stallion rather suspicious. Still, it wasn't any of his affair if Tosiek did not want to live up to his heritage and, really, he really didn't want to know who the avian hybrid's mother was. If he knew he'd have to fight off a desire to kill the child, which was a sentiment he completely disagreed with.
"My condolences to you, then," he said politely. "I hate to bring up bad memories." He paused for a beat before continuing on, directing his next question to the pair of kids. "Was there something I can help you with?"

Tosiek tried to keep from sending Thalia a blank look, trying to nicely tell her with his eyes to keep her nose out of it. Still, he had to give a dutiful nod of sad agreement at her words; laying it on a bit thick, she was! Still, after a long moment of hesitation-- during which Tosi's mind was screaming at him to run because the Queen of Hearts hadn't bought it-- Queen Shinrai very kindly offered condolences and left Tosiek with a sense of heavy relief that the Queen had believe the lie. Maybe Thalia had helped.
"I try not to think about it," he answered almost truthfully. He could have spun quite the long, involved, sad tail, but it was a relief to not have to for once. At the Queen's new question, however, he turned to send Thalia a swift, questioning glance. She was the one to bring them here.

Thalia smiled brightly at him. She was slowly managing to put Eir's presence out of her mind as she focused on the Queen. "I just wanted to spend time with you, I guess. We're kind of, um, related, I think, on account of how you knocked up my mom and my big brothers and sisters are your kids. That works, right?"
It worked in her head, anyway. She really didn't need a good reason. She wanted to have fun with Queen Rai--like they had with Ginger! Those were the days--and coming right to Court to say hello had seemed like the right thing to do at the time, especially when she could bring Tosiek in to say hello too. In the back of her mind she also had the idea to steal a bunch of fireworks and use the gunpowder to make explosives, but that quest was entirely secondary.

Oh, he was going to be sick. Wot a disgusting load of absolute and complete bull! Eir's ears flicked backwards and he felt a muscle in his cheek jump as he fought the urge to try and vomit all over the group.
The bird thing was blatantly lying and Shinrai was a moron for falling for it. It did, however, make the little *%&$ a bit more interesting to the yearling. Why was Tosiek so interested in hiding his parentage? Eir would just have to find out.
The teen fought off his look of disbelief at Thalia's reasoning for being there; she really was retarded. He had thought that for two potentially brilliant women like his mother and her roommate their child together wold be a thing of intelligence and cleverness. No, she was a *#$(ing moron. Oh, that helped bring justice to the world! At least everyone was ignoring him for now; he wouldn't have to fake niceness.

Rai had to admit that he was a bit flattered by Thalia's explanation, even if it saddened him as well. Thalia and Elyse were the most normal of 'his' kids, and they weren't even actually his children. Plus, Thalia definitely had some screws loose. He still like her a lot, though, and enjoyed spending time with her when he could.
"I appreciate your sentiment," the stallion said with a small smile. "And I would enjoy spending time with you. Unfortunately, I need to work right now. Would it be possible for us to meet later this evening instead?" He gave her the serious consideration he would an adult. He secretly thought that Mnem and Minh had both been smoking and/or drunk at the moment of Thalia's conception which had led to her penchant for walking into closed doors. That's where he thought she'd gotten a little addled.
