Still trotting after them, running now on pure annoyance, came Gaston. The Highland mix was irritated to the point where he was tempted to simply pick the two of them up and trot them back to the palace, dump them in his Queens' lap, and go soak in a hot bath...maybe bother that new Sekhmet girl a bit more...
He at least wished he had his horse, this was ridiculous! He shouldn't have to be doing this, why on earth hadn't he just hired a Spade or something...?
Grumbling to himself, he followed relentlessly after the pair, a short ways behind, but always right on their tail.
He would find out where the dratted thing lived or his name wasn't Gaston!
And....it had better be? He was awfully tired.
Damn this...stupid Ace making stay up running.
Ponytail slightly amuss, the top heavy vigilante moved on.

The smile that had worked its way onto Asha's face was almost heartbreaking.
She was completely unaware of the pain in Ataxia's mind, or why she would draw such strong feelings from the other Card. All she knew was that on this exciting, wonderful, scary day, she had finally done it. She made a friend for herself, someone who wasn't even a part of her family! She couldn't wait for the canine to meet her siblings and parentals, all of them. She was sure they'd all get along so well. Xia was nice like the rest of the people she'd met, and the little skunk knew she'd be welcomed openly.
As soon as she got home, that was.
Her ears perked up slightly at the mention of a way out. She wished, just a little bit, that she could see. In her mind, the exit was like some kind of glowing gateway to happiness and (maybe! if she was lucky!) teaparties. She wiggled with childish excitment.
"Oh, good!" she laughed, fluffy tail twitching with joy. "I'm really excited, Xia... This is my first time out!"

Ataxia nearly expected guards to pop out or the gates to come crashing down or something. It couldn't be this easy...There had to be something she missed. She glanced about, looking as far to the peripheral as she could without looking too suspicious (though it wasn't nearly far enough behind her to notice the Highland mix biped tailing them). All safe...
Once she passed through the gate and on to the open road, her muscles relaxed, letting her tail wag freely. The city was behind them along with the dangers inside. The way to Corvistowne would be a lengthy one, but she had food to spare and it wouldn't hurt her to stay up a couple nights straight. It would make tailing them for the entire trip nigh impossible...unless they happened to be a Club.
"If you've never been out before, I guess you haven't camped out before either, huh? No worries! Nothing like sleeping under the stars to give you a..."
She had nearly forgotten. Asha was blind.
"Think warm, thin rays of sunlight poking through blankets. Now think of them far away, but millions, billions of them way up high. That's sort of what it's like."

Things were definitely starting to look up. The air had a new smell to it, brisk and clean, and Asha moved so that she could better get her nose up into it. Her mind was flooded with her own ideas of what it must look like around them, and her smile only widened as Ataxia began to try and describe to her the stars. Her eyes slid shut as the thoughts flooded her mind, and if she pretended just hard enough, she almost believed she could see it.
"It sounds so beautiful... Almost like when I lay outside and the sun comes down through leaves." she giggled, covering her nose with her paws. She loved to sleep on the grass in the yard at every opportunity, and even more than that she loved the feeling of the sun playing across her fur. "Is it warm, like the sun?" she wondered aloud. "At night, I'm not allowed to go outside... My momma says that it's too cold out, but I trust you to keep us both warm."
While she loved heat, cold was not one of the skunk's favorite things, and she fluffed her fur out slightly at the thought. At least she had a big fluffy tail, it would keep her warm while Ataxia ran.

As she put some distance between herself and the city, she picked up the pace a bit, her paws kicking up a bit of dust as she ran. After all the stress and strain in the city, it smelled the the air a prisoner would take in after being stuck in a prison for decades. It must have been even better for her friend and passenger.
"All the stars are suns in their own right. They're just really far away and their light's sort of drowned out when our sun is up and about. But when our sun goes to rest, those other suns, the stars, shine bright."
She bit her tongue mentally as she tried to avoid going into the scientific aspect of it, their world going around a sun and how that would create day and night and why it is, therefore, colder. No need for that mess.
"While there are a lot of them up there, since most of them or smaller or farther away, they don't bring as much heat down here. But that's no problem. I've got plenty of fur for the both of us to stay warm. And if it gets too chilly during the trip, you can shimmy up closer to where my mane hangs. That should help a bit."

Asha's expression changed to one of wonder as she looked in the direction she knew as skyward. Slowly, that wonder began to fade, and Asha could feel her stomach start to drop. It all seemed so sad to her suddenly, and she didn't know how to explain why. The events of the day were finally sinking in, and though she was still smiling, it was completely empty. She couldn't understand it fully. How could she, when she couldn't see what the canine was telling her about?
"Like... Like people, almost." she finally whispered, a hint of sadness creeping into her voice. From those simple, almost enigmatic words, so much of the skunk's personality crept through. She wasn't entirely sure how to put the rest of her thoughts into words, and so for now she simply lay her head down again, hoping that Ataxia would understand. The feeling of the other Card beneath her, soft and strong, was honestly all that was keeping her together right now.
"Xia..." she finally whispered, snuggling into the tangle of mane that was closest to her. There was a wet heat as she pressed her head in close, the only evidence of the tears that she could feel beginning to well up. "What's wrong with me?"

Ataxia's ears perked up at the little skunk's whisper and she slowed her trot to a walk to pay better attention to her words. Those words had a weight to them, one that she wasn't used to hearing in Asha's voice. It was different from how she spoke when nervous or frightened. No, this was...depression.
"Xia...What's wrong with me?"
The feeling of warm and wet as Asha nuzzled her head into her mane forced Xia to stop. It dug at the darker parts of her memory, at wounds that were far from healed and profusely bled. She would not...couldn't tell Asha of the hateful, foolish opinions of Aces. She couldn't break that beautiful innocence, that happy little smile completely oblivious to the world around her. She was too young. She wasn't ready for that truth, and she was not the one to tell her. After a moment's pause, she answered her passenger in a voice more determined than her usual cheery, carefree speech.
"Listen, Asha. There is nothing wrong with you. There is only something wrong with other people. Don't you forget that."

"I just don't... I don't understand it." the girl whispered, rubbing at her face with a blue-and-red paw before settling in closely once more. There was something in Ataxia's tone that she found soothing, and it wasn't long before the tears stopped. She fell quiet once again, simply taking in as much of their surroundings as she possibly could before sighing softly. The day had really taken a lot of energy out of her, and it showed through most clearly in her depression. The sounds made by the men that had chased them seemed to be on repeat in her head, and she shook them away with a more comforting notion.
"But it's not all bad." she smiled again. It was never hard to find something good in the world, even when you knew about all the bad. Her sister, Mori, was the one to teach her that. "I mean... I met you today, Xia, and that wonderful mister Gaston!" she grinned, giggling to herself. She could tell that she had upset the canine somehow, and she knew that it was up to her to try and lighten the mood again before they got to Corvistowne.

"I don't either, Asha. But you've got people who love you and willing to protect you. Your parents, your papa...and you've got me too. Now, enough of those tears. You're gonna make me cry."
Which was a lie. She already had trails of wet fur below her eyes, but she wouldn't let Asha know about that. Remembering that they still had ways to go, Xia started running again, letting the wind rushing past them to dry her tears. They couldn't dwell on these thoughts, not now. They had places to go, eventually parents to find. She had to keep calm and collected for this work.
Xia smiled a bit as she heard a bit of optimism creep back into Asha's voice. It warmed her spirits a bit to know that meeting her brought a bit of sunshine into her day, though that was quickly chilled by having her paired up with Gaston.
"Yeah...Gaston. He's definitely an...interesting character."
