"I'm glad to see you too, eh don't be sorry, I brought this on myself." The King chuckled, waving off the surprised look he had gotten from touching the other's hand and the comment.
"Queen Rai may seem intimidating, but I wouldn't worry too much, he needs help and he knows it. I'll talk to him if you'd like, he knows you're a hard worker, he'll need your assistance, I'm sure. Worst come to worst, we have some other rising Queens, have you met little Xiven? She'll be needing help shortly too...I think you're in the clear."
He smiled, attempting to reassure the mix. It was hard though, Bernard wasn't sure who was going to be able to remain here...he was almost certain that he wouldn't be here long. Neither Xiven nor Rai had much interest in him...
He pushed those thoughts aside and smiled as Severus returned his light jab, glad that he had picked up the joke.
Maybe you could even come with me.
Bernard looked surprised, he couldn't help it...the idea that Severus would even want him there...
"Thank you for the offer, Severus...maybe someday I will...I haven't been traveling sine my trip to the Tulgey, I'd like to go somewhere again..."
He grinned, looking a bit more alive again, propping himself up slightly.
"I'd be only too glad to help you, though I may not be in the palace much longer, still...there are things you should know...you know what? When you go to get the journals from my travels to the glaciers, on the third shelf from the door, highest shelf, is a small red book...I often kept a list of Serafino's biggest complaints...I found them funny, but in all honesty They are things you'll need to keep in mind. Until I'm up again, that's a good start, as is reading through the roster and as much as you may not want to...getting to know everyone. We have yet to host a successful Queen who was a hermit, Severus."
He smiled again.
"Other than that, there's not much I can do until I can walk again."

He was glad the man did not ask about the awkwardness of the moment, or why he was so suprised. He didn't want to dwell on it anymore. He was saddened slightly by the man's willingness to blame himself. He wanted to tell him that it wasn't his fault, that he was to blame to...for not being in the courts that fateful day that lead to both Fino's death and Bernard's condition. He still didn't know all the details, but his mind began to be haunted by the mantra "What if I had been there?". No...he couldn't think that way. Look at the state that Bernard was in. There was no way he would have survived, even if he had been there to help. His strength was in a sorrowful state, as his mind was more focused on his potion work among other things. That would have to be rectified, and fast, if he ever wanted to reach his final goal.
Then the subject changed, and he was allowed to think of his future, instead of what might have been. "I would most, appreciate a good word, but I would have you worry about yourself before me. he grew uncomfortible then, as if he was about to be scolded for his lack of socializing, he shook his head. "I do not....care much for children...I know there are a few new Queens running about, but I have not sought them out." curse himself for taking Fino for granted. If there was anything he could learn from this...it was to never take life for granted. Even leaders can fall.
He was wondering if he had said the right thing, when Bernard gave him a suprised look. Did he say something again that he wasn't suppose to? He didn't think so, it seemed kind enough. But when the man smiled, his anxiety subsided. "I have never....really been anywhere but Corvistowne and various small areas required to go through to get there." he sighed a bit, "There is still much to learn."
He wondered if he should allow the man to remain proped up....Heilyn had made a point of making sure he lay down. Well...if the man was stubburn about it...He would jsut make sure he laid back down before he left.
"Do you really think you will not be in the palace anymore? I mean...they can't throw you out!" his voice didn't raise, but the dismay was painfully evident, "You are a wealth of knowledge and have been here far longer then any of the current ruling figures in the court at present! Surely one of the Queens will take you up!"
He noded about the books, and about his hermit lifestyle most of all. Bernard knew that Severus wasn't dumb. Severus knew what becoming a Queen would entale in terms of his current lifestyle. A massive makeover needed to take place. That was probably going to be the hardest part. He really needed someone who would be able to help him with that...such as Bernard...or....Bernard. He sighed inwardly. He needed more allies. "I will be sure to take a look at those. If it would not be...intrusive."
He nodded slightly, "I will not ask anything of you until you are well...then maybe we can talk further, if you would be so kind."

Pravus sat outside the room, wringing his hands somewhat. He couldn't. . . this couldn't. . . It was all too much for him to handle and he began to feel like a child. But he heard, heard that Bernard had killed the bastard that did it, Fino's own father. The fucking bastard. And he hadn't be able to help, at all. He paced a bit more, near whispering to himself. Talking him self into and out of going through that door. But finally his emotions won out and he knocked, swearing under his breathe as he did so. Crap, now he really would have to go in there. . .He really would have to face Bernard, who killed Blaine, who killed. . . His mind would not let him finish his thought, funny that. He waited, every second seeming to last an eternity. Perhaps Bernard really was unconscious, that would be easier. He could say what he wanted, no needed, to without him really hearing it. Pravus smiled, yes, this would be easier. He eased open the door and slid inside, fully expecting an unconscious Bernard sprawled upon the bed.

Bernard nodded at Severus's statements. He knew the man didn't prefer children, but Xiven was growing quickly, she was more stable than say...Lani, at any rate...as much as he loved the girl, she was so flighty...he wondered how she was...
"I'm sure you'll be fine, just talk to Queen Rai, you wouldn't be a King to him long so, he should be fine with the situation. I wouldn't worry."
He shook his head at the worry expressed on his own behalf, him mouth stretched in a thin line.
"I can't honestly say, I know Xiven has no use for me and Rai has others in mind, I don't know if he'll want to keep me on...so I'll just have to get another place, I'm sure I can find one, don't worry about me."
He was touched by the worry, he honestly hadn't expected it from the other man...his pupil. he did hope he could stay...he so wanted to. Leaving...he wasn't sure he actually could find a place...Regardless.
"I would very much appreciate talking to you further on this subject when I am feeling a bit better, thank you, Severus...I'm sure you'll be fine. Thank you...by the way, for coming to see me."
He flushed a bit as he said it and slowy lay back down, his back and side ached horribly...he could feel the pounding starting up again in the back of his head.
"Drop by in a few days and I'll-"
He stopped as the door was pushed open and a wide eyed man slunk in. He looked emotionally torn to bits and his appearance gave Bernard's heart a painful start. The Cat was the last person he had expected...he was rather glad that Severus was still here, the feline looked a little mad and-....
He could feel the blood draining from his face and he knew he was turning a little green...
Oh god...why was Pravus here? Bernard hoped the Cat wasn't about to attack him in a rage, he wasn't sure there was anything he would be able to do to defend himself...
"I uh...Pravus?"

Severus simply noded at the comment about Queen Rai. If one thing was true, if he was able to know peoples names from just...hearing them on the wind, the chances that others have heard about him and his works to the court were just as likely. Hopefully that would give him some sort of leg up...or at least the knowledge that he was looking for Queenship. Something.
But at the moment he grew worried. His worry laying strictly with Bernard's future. It was all true that he himself may very well not get a place in the courts any longer, but he couldn't fathom court life without Bernard. Maybe there was a part of him that still held on to the conservitive ways of Fino being Queen and Bernard being his King. Maybe it was just the last bit of child within him that always imagined Bernard within the palace walls til death do him part. He just couldn't even imagine what it would be like...that he would walk down the halls (if he stayed anyway) and wouldn't have the chance of running into him.
"You could be mine." the thought suddenly coming to him. "If no one claims you before then....I would be.....more then honored." he said, with honesty ringing in his voice. He really didn't know why he hadn't thought of it. To have Bernard as his king! Why...he couldn't imagine anyone better. He has all the court knowledge, he could...erm...help him on his court manners, neither of them would have to leave their home, the list just seemed to go on. "Yes, very honored." he noded with a bit more enthusiasm then he meant to show.
"I really wanted to." he said in reguards to the man's gratitude for him visiting. He and his mother were like family to him...well...his mother was...but that wasn't the point. They were probably the only two people he really had come to care about on a level that he might even dare to call love. It was hard to hate Bernard though, as seen by everyone who had come to visit him. But still, he had managed to soften Severus just a tiny bit.
"I will come by..." he began to say when the door eased open, and the one he could only imagine was Pravus walked through the door. It was as if a frame skipped, and the emotional Severus that had been around only seconds before turned to his usual cold exterior. His eyes were half lidded and uninterested, his body ridged, and his arms crossed in front of him.
He wasn't quite sure what to make of the creature. Whatever he might have thought soon changed when he saw the look on Bernard's face. Bernard seemed frightened, and soon a shakey voice confirmed it was indeed the man he thought that the man was.

(( sorry for that guys X3 I was just like. *FLAIL* He's trying to talk! XD *licks you* ))
Pravus lifted his head to look at the . . . not prone Bernard on the bed in front of him. Crap, he was awake. . . this was going to be harder than he thought. How did he say everything he needed to say to a man who he'd always goaded and tried to scare. How did you . . reverse all of that.
And why the hell was that snake THING in the room? Pravus near growled at Severus but stopped himself, for sake of Bernard. "Get out." He said calmly, but with an edge of anxiety. If anyone found out what he was about to do, to say to Bernard. He wouldn't be taken seriously again. The big bad torturer who had a good ol cry in front of the old king. . .
He merely pointed at the door and watched Sev, demanding he leave.

Bernard nodded to Severus, indicating that he should leave...there was something about Pravus's voice...that was off. Whatever this was going to be about, it shouldn't have to involve Severus.
"Don't worry, I'll be fine...I promise."
Once the mix had stood and left, Bernard would draw his attention nervously back to the anxious looking Feline.
"Pravus?"
He asked again, not looking well. He needed to relax his face, his expressions were starting to pull badly at the skin surrounding his empty socket and it was making the exposed blood vessels pound.
He tried to prop himself up and failed, his side lancing another wave of pain through him. He was worried...still afraid. The tone of the Cats' voice had been slightly reassuring, cold but not...insane. Maybe Pravus hadn;t come to kill him, merely to yell? Well, had to get it over with one way or the other.
"What...what can I do for you, Pravus?"

Pravus watched with a blank glare as Sev slowly made his way to the door and finally, FINALLY left. He had never liked the Card and he wasn't about to start now. So stuck up and proud of himself for practically nothing, in his mind. After the door finally shut Pravus stared at it for a minute. His face going from blank intimidating to. . unsure. He turned as Bernard spoke, seeing the strain in the kings face and wincing.
He moved quickly to Bernard's side and put a gentle arm around the king, trying to help him sit.
"I . . didn't mean to scare you." He said quietly before taking a seat in a chair beside the bed.
He watched the King for a minute before sighing heavily and dropping his head into his hands.
"I'm sorry I couldn't help him, Bernard. I'm so sorry. And I'm sorry I couldn't help you kill Blaine." His breath caught in his throat and he closed his eyes, hiding his face behind his hands.

Bernard watched the Cat's expression closely as Severus left....his expression changed. Falling slowly to an uncertain...flat expression. That was new...
He was shocked, therefore, when pravus moved to his side and helped him lie back down without pulling anything. He tensed at the touch, heart racing...but it was gentle...
What the hell?
"I...it's alright, Pravus."
He watched the Feline sit down and watch his hands for a few moments, then drop his head into them, letting out a shaky sigh.
His next line struck Bernard as a complete shock.
He was sorry? Pravus? This was incredibly surreal...
Bernard gently reached out a hand and rested it on the Cat's elbow, as high as he could reach at the moment and squeezed reassuringly.
"I'm sorry too...sorry that I wasn't awake, that I wasn't there to help him... Or to take the knife for him. It wasn't your fault, Pravus."
He felt so lost, was this how Pravus was when he had been with his Nephew? Is this what he saw in the Cat? Pravus...?
