Loreta was not in a good mood, but that was hardly a surprise. She stalked through the bed and breakfast that she had finally managed to buy and completely own. She was cooking for people, being happy, and then she had to screw it all up by getting drunk and... getting killed. And yet somehow she was still alive. And then she went and made trouble. Smart thing to do. Honestly she couldn't understand her own stupid. It was enough to make her want to kick puppies. But rather than that she decided that she was going to go out and have some quality time with Kaden. Her darling troublemaker. She sighed as she knocked on his door. She didn't wait for him to answer, she simply opened it up and assumed that he wasn't doing anything destructive or disgusting. Even if he was she would just shrug it off like she normally did. "Kaden, we're going out shopping to get you a weapon."

Kaden couldn't believe that he still hadn't quite gotten it. He'd been standing in front of a mirror, banging his head into the glass for longer than he could count when he suddenly heard a disrupting knock. His spinning head screamed with thanks. It also berated him with reminders that no good came of walking into the same brick wall, which probably meant he ought to try a different tactic of learning. And then the door swung open, which it usually didn't do when most people knocked, and Kaden turned to find himself facing his mother. Ever since the 'incident' she'd been both younger and more frustrated, but Kaden didn't mind because his mother was the best person in the world. "Hey mum!" He bound forward on long legs in order to greet the human woman with an avian hug. "A weapon?! Awesome!" He hopped back, shook himself off, and whistled for Quicksand. You didn't keep Mom waiting when she had something she wanted to do and Kaden had never been the dawdling sort. "So!" he announced once ready, "where are we going?"

She wasn't going to ask why her son was was banging his head against a mirror. She would just drop it where it was. Shrugging everything off she rolled her eye at her son when he called his bander. Honestly they were nasty little buggers she could live without.
"Just a place a little ways from here. It's not too out of the way, but I need to stop by my room to get my bat. Just in case." She said absently as she started walking towards her room, assuming her son would follow or not.
It didn't take her very long to grab her bat. Blythe looked up at her curiously, gliding to her side. She shook her head, "No, you stay here. We don't have any customers, but I want you to keep the inn safe." Of course, Blythe made no protest, and just rubbed up against his owner briefly.
"All right, off we go," She said as she turned carefully. She did her best not to run into the wall. Stupid lack of eye, it really screwed things up for her.

Kaden liked mom's bat. It was awesome and a little gritty from smacking lots of people and making them bleed. In fact, her bat of misery and woe was exactly why he'd always wanted a weapon of his own. "Kay!" The muttbird chirp-squawked as Loreta headed out of the room. He'd hang back and wait, while she went in. Pet Quicksand and make sure his head didn't spin too much more from 'mirror walking' or the failure therein, stuff like that.
When Loreta returned, Kaden jumped to attention with his head a bit more intact than before. His tail feathers wagged happily as he went, snagging the door and nudging it open so that Mum could walk out first.
It was gentlemanly stuff, holding the door open for ladies, that he saw his dad doing all the time so he just assumed his Mum liked it or that he just ought to do it.

"Thank you," Loreta muttered as she walked out of the door before her son. One thing his father had done was teach him how to be a gentlemen. A weak smile crept onto her face as she motioned for Kaden to lock the door behind him. Despite not having hands he was skilled enough to at least do that.
She leaned on her back to look at the boy. "Do you want to get something to eat while we're out?"
She might as well try to play the good mother. It was difficult. Being a good mother and all. As much as she loved her boy, he was an easily excitable little monster. There was no hiding from the truth. And as good as a job she did "training" him to do the right thing he still didn't listen to her about the important things.
"By the way, you haven't done anything illegal recently?" She muttered as she started walking towards their destination.

Kaden bobbed his head as his mother moved through the door, and he smiled slightly at the woman. He loved doing things right, especially when it came to making his mum happy.
"Food sounds wonderful!" He chirp-squawked with pleasure at that idea and lightly bumped the woman's arm as he moved past her. She was the best and funnest mom in the world.
"By the way, you haven't done anything illegal recently?"
Oh yeah... Except for those questions, they were very much 'motherly' and much less 'awesome best-friend mom-fun'. The mix chuckled and flashed his mom the best "i've been an angel" smile.
Usually he would say 'that would depend on your definition of illegal' but he knew mom's definition of illegal because they'd already had that conversation. All in all that left him with very few answers that didn't involve outright lying -- because he tried very hard not to lie to his mother, ever. After a too-long pause, he flashed the smile again.
"It's only illegal if you're --caught-- doing it, and I wasn't."
...That sounded far worse out loud. And he had been caught one of the times, he'd just managed to get away. Really, if he could figure out how to do that mirror thing then he wouldn't have to worry about getting caught so much...

At least the food was a way to get on his good side. The woman snorted, though, when he made the comment about not getting caught. If he was saying it like that, then clearly he had been caught. How many times was a matter of guessing, but still.
"Means you were caught. How many times?" She asked nonchalantly as they made their way down the path. The town they lived in wasn't filled with people all the time. It was before the lunch hour, so there were very few people scurrying about, tending to their own things. The buildings looked run down, per usual, and the bed and breakfast looked like a shining beacon to outsiders. It was kind of funny to think about.
"And you remembered to cover you tracks? I don't want any crazies knocking on my door." Loreta said with a small smile. He knew full well what she meant. Though if there were Lowlanders... she would be more than happy to pound their faces in.

Loreta's bluntness in reply to his mischevious and all too ambiguous statement caused the muttbird to blush heavily under his dark feathers, eyes momentarily averting. How did she always know He knew already that she usually saw through everything he said, but occasionally her skill still caught him by surprise. "Just once, really. An' I got away before anything serious happened." He smiled, trying to reassure his mum -- though she didn't really look all too concerned -- that he was just fine, like always. "Yep! Always." This could be said with complete and utter honesty. He never went home without first knowing that the cost was clear. In fact, he made sure he had a number of little hideaways to slip into first before bringing trouble knocking on mom's door. "I'd never bring trouble to your door, not on my life." He beamed a little more and quickly recovered his casual ease. No worries, he wasn't in trouble, life was going smoothly.

Loreta gave the boy a skeptical look, briefly, before turning her eyes back to the street. It was nice to hear that her son did have some sense in that head of his. Sometimes she worried that he was a absent minded as Hatter was. Combined with Kaden's malicious mischief making that would be lethal. "Good. Because if you weren't careful we'd have to have a nice little talk."
They still had a little way to go before they got to the shop.
"So, I'm curious... Is there any particular weapon you're interested in?" She knew her son at least thought her bat was "cool," but she was never really good at understanding his tastes. And she would never understand them, good mother or not.
The shop was in the distance. It fit in well with the rest of the Corvie buildings, with the exterior falling to pieces. The little sign on the shop was missing several letters, the paint pealing.

He could tell Mum wasn't ready to believe him, but he didn't worry about that. Of course she'd worry, she was his Mum. He'd just have to keep proving how good he was.. He'd encountered a few clumsy surprises, what with the second set of wings that kept him from flying, but he was still pretty good at the whole sneaking bit.
"If somethin' serious happened, I'd stop..." Especially if he brought it home. The muttbird's feathers puffed up at that thought but quickly smoothed down as they continued onto the next subject: Weapons. That was a lot easier to focus on.
"Huh... Not yet, really. I really like your Bat, but something a bit easier to conceal might be useful for me." There were so many blasted variations of weapons to choose from! "Got any suggestions?"
As the weapon shop came into view, Kaden picked up his stride a little and his grin began to grow even wider. This was going to be great~.
