Mnem's face screwed up in irritation. She didn't want to think about that. She was much more interested in why the hell Minh was taking a blood sample from Aderlass. Rough childhood, he said, and Mnem filed that away for future questioning.
"Not as such," she said, digging around in the kitchen for some of the cookies she had put away. She wanted to hurt something, and she figured destroying a sweet would have to do. She found the right container, opened it, and pulled out a few cookies. Gingerbread. Perfect. They were even shaped like little people.
Mnem bit the head off one of them, savored the taste of the gingery decapitated head, and then said, "So, is there any particular reason the two of you are exchanging vital bodily fluids, or are you just poking each other with needles for the fun of it?"

Haret stared at the plant in her hands for a long moment, ears flat again her dark neck as Mnem exited swiftly and in a swirl of obvious irritation. For some reason this happened to her a great deal. Perhaps the other canine had caught the Torquehelm's disinterest in the deeper meanings and wotnot of the myriad of offered plants. Also, wasn't she paying for this? She took a few hesitant steps after the Yarrow Garden's female, pausing at the threshold as she heard the group speaking beyond.
The Morganberry mouse asked after her, and Haret felt her heart lift slightly that there was a little interest in her whereabouts, but as she was about to step out, Mnem replied in her biting tones and the black woman knew it was simply time to go. The only way she knew to get out, of course, had to be straight through there.
With a sudden swallow, Haret stepped into the area after Mnem and sent a quick, uneasy glance around. "Thank you all for your assistance. I really must go." She hesitated, as though she might say more, but instead simply made a beeline for the front door, carefully dodging around the various obstacles until she could reach freedom.

Minh didn't get a chance to say anything scathing in response--and she really couldn't help but wonder at Mnem's innate ability to make everything sound like sexual innuendo--as at that very moment Haret decided to grace them with her gloomy presence, and Minh didn't feel it prudent to continue the conversation with such a convenient means of escape.
Without a proper means to vent, however, Minh started thinking. And started worrying. She couldn't help but start wondering if Mnem's comment hadn't been in flippant passing, but completely intentional. Did she know what deal Minh had to cut in order to get her blood samples? She felt herself start to flush. It was embarrassing. And it would only be worse if Mnem, of all people, knew about it.
She watched Haret make a speedy exit, and wondered what Mnem had done to spook the poor woman so.
"Er... Bye, Miss Haret. Nice meeting you."

He watched as she looked at them with an uneasy gaze. “Ah Miss Haret. . .” He trailed off at her words however. Had they done something to make her feel uneasy? Rubbing gently at his wound – she better be worth it – he tried to think over what he might have done to offend the canine.
Before he could say anything else in way of partings to the Torquehelm, Haret was out the door. He hoped she would be okay. Turning back to face Mnem he raised an eyebrow in question. “Wot did you do to her?” he asked.
Rounding on Minh he continued their earlier conversation. “Do not come near me ever again with a needle in your hand, you hear? You had better knock me out first, if you can, and hope to past sundown that when I awake I do not find out wot you did.” He needed more coffee.

Mnem eyed Haret as she scurried out of the house, apparently trying to pass unnoticed. Perhaps she had been a little bit abrupt. But her nerves had been wearing thin. And the canine drifting off into her own little universe had been the last straw. There had been some kind of miscommunication at some point. She thought for a moment about hunting down an address and sending flowers to her children, but shortly thought better of it. They were probably Torquehelms too, anyway, and they didn't seem to appreciate anything other than gloom. Maybe she could send them dead flowers.
"Nothing, really," said Mnem with a small shrug. "Just a minor misunderstanding, I think. Lovely woman. Not very interested in plants. So, would anyone care for a cup of tea? You can tell me all about this business with the needles. I'm quite interested to hear about it."

Minh muttered rather unpleasantly, not for the first time exasperated with Mnem's inability to let anything slide by without comment. She really didn't want to discuss the nature of Aderlass and her agreement if she could help it.
Time to play nonchalant and hope Mnem didn't pick anything up--the best lie was mixed with a bit of truth, after all.
"There's not much to tell past that Red, here, is apparently a bit skittish around pointy objects."
She poured herself a cup of coffee this time, and slid the pot over towards Aderlass in case he wanted a refill. Speaking of needle-induced stress...
"Which I suppose I can sympathize a bit. When I was first learning how to draw properly, I used my brother as a test subject until he held me down and tried it on me as a sort of revenge. The prick really wasn't that bad, though. I was more upset at being squished."

The mouse was more then happy to accept the coffee pot that was pushed his way. Refilling his cup he let the lovely aroma clam the rest of his nerves. He had not realized just how much he hated needles. Giving a small curse under his breath he looked around for a subject change.
He found such a change in topic when Minh revealed a little of her history to them. “You have an older brother?” He could not imagine growing up with other siblings. He must have been a pretty big guy if he squished her by that alone. “You probably deserved everyone minute of that being squished too. I feel sorry for your brother having to put up with you.” He replied with only a little of his original anger at her, most of it was just him joking in return.
She kept referring to him a ‘Red’, which true enough he was that color, but he was not sure how he felt being called that as a name.

Minh snorted in denial, "Oh, my brother loves me well enough. He never was ever really cross with me, ya'know? Not even that week I set off to make my fortune as a pirate and only got about five miles from home before I was completely and utterly lost. He just laughed, bought me a compass, and pointed me in the right direction," she took a sip of coffee, "though by that point I'd changed my mind about the whole roughing-it scenario. Nana wasn't so forgiving."
But, enough about her. Talking about home made her want to visit, and she really wasn't in the position at the moment. She had things to do, people to kidnap. She couldn't bother with stuffing herself with delicious food, corrupting her nieces and nephews, and bickering with Nana. Nope. Not at all.
...maybe a vacation was in order....

Minh told her pirate tale and then seemed to drift off into her own world, and for a brief moment Mnem envied her her happy memories. But only for a moment. She finished making the tea and brought it back to the table, where Minh and Aderlass were enjoying some coffee. Minh had changed the subject rather quickly.
She almost wanted to press the issue, but she suspected that with like so many other things concerned with Minh, she really didn't want to know the messy details. She did wonder what Aderlass was getting in exchange for his apparent blood donation, though. Perhaps a mutant bander--but who in their right mind would want a Monty of their own? Perhaps some army of clones.
She pinched the bridge of her nose. She needed a nap.
"Where on earth is your brother now? We should invite his family over for dinner sometime."

Minh laughed, not at all enjoying the idea of her brother visiting the apartment. With exception to his kitchen, her brother had a neurotic, deep-seated compulsion to clean. Everything. After years of training she'd finally managed to impress on him that her lab was off limits, though he still would sneak in on occasion to pick up a few books and clean the sink full of beakers and flasks. The thought of him running loose in the apartment was appalling. She had a very intricate, little-understand means of organization and she didn't need her dear, elder brother shifting through her things to dust.
"Ngai lives with his husband at the old homestead in Corvistowne; more to give Nana a place to live than anything else. They have...six kids, now? And--dinner would be delightful, as long as it was my brother cooking."
