She choked back the tears as she slipped through the window of Hatter's manner. He had told her the exact place to go, and which windows where unlocked. Her feet hit the floor with a soft thud. Moving into the room with her hair trailing behind her she looked around. Well, it was dimly lit so she didn't see much. She continued until she found the proper door. "Hatter?" she called as she peaked her head around the corner. She couldn't see anything. Peaches found herself choking on her words. How she was staying together she wasn't entirely sure. Quickly she moved down the hallway, looking frantically around. Where the hell was he? She stopped when she entered a sitting room. She made a whimpering sound as she moved towards the couch. Unexpectedly she flopped on sofa. If he wasn't here she got to cry alone. And she burst into tears without warning. Fantastic.

Hatter had been downstairs with Marchie when Peaches slipped in through the window, having dinner and discussing various aphrodisiacs, and would be slowly making his way back upstairs by the time she flopped onto the sofa. Marchie would be distracted for the night, so he had the evening alone to drink tea and fiddle with his own experiments. Or so he thought. The sound of tears caused him to tense abruptly, stopping dead in his tracks on the top step of the basement stairs. His hair fluffed slightly and his feather's bristled up beneath his hat as he tilted his head to the side and attempted to figure out what was making the sounds in his living room. They were distinctly female, he thought, and were definitely sobbing sort...not anything dangerous. He hoped. Slowly Hatter edged around the door, half at alert and half plain confused, until he saw what was sprawled on his sofa: Peaches! "Peaches?" He was at her side in a moment, eyes wide and confusion radiating off of him. Why... Who had made his Perfect Stranger cry!? "What happened, Peaches? Why are you crying?" Hatter, as usual, forgot about all about personal boundaries and had her scooped in his arms the moment he reached the couch; giving her no time to react or escape his affections.

She didn't expect to be picked up, but it was welcome. She couldn't complain as she choked on her tears. "Oh Hatter, I'm just so useless! I'm so useless it's like my heart's been ripped out! Everything is falling apart!" Her voice was scratchy, hardly her usual cheery voice. She was a wreak.
Her hands tightened around Hatter. It was nice to have someone to hold onto who wasn't actually crazy. Well, Hatter wasn't exactly sane, but he wasn't completely and utterly insane. "Someone... someone I care about broke. Because I wasn't enough for him. I'm useless Hatter! Useless."
She sniffed as she broke into tears again. She was clutching on to Hatter's chest. If her gloves had been of her nails probably would have been digging through his shirt. Peaches death grip was all she had at the moment. Tears and holding on.

Hatter nearly whined at the way Peaches sobbed and her voice broke. It wasn't like her, all these tears and this horrible sorrow, and it broke his heart to see her enduring it. Quietly he kissed her, holding her firm against him with a grip as vice-like as her own.
"Oh Peaches..." His words came out in a sigh, unusually mature. "You're not useless, Peaches. Never." He shook his head, suddenly unable to find the words he wanted. "I... I don't know what's happened, but you're not useless. You could never be useless to me." There was no way to explain why, Hatter didn't fully understand it himself. It was better just to hold and kiss and cuddle her until those terrible thoughts went away.
He'd do anything, anything at all, to ease these tears.
"You can tell me if you'd like. Everything. I'd like to know what happened." He sighed heavily, his arms tightening around her with protective force. "O, my Perfect Stranger, how could anyone make you cry?"

She sobbed horribly as brushed her tear stained face against his chest. He was so kind enough to help her. She had just show up and he was trying to make her feel better. It was working. "I-I care about someone who doesn't care about me. It wasn't supposed to be like that! Not at all. I tried to make everything better but he... he doesn't care. He never did. He's not capable of love. But I just wanted to try and help him and now--"
She sobbed. Trying to find the words was so difficult. "He's gone. Mentally. Mentally he's out the window completely and I-I can't stand to see him like that." She burst into a series of tears once again. Why had Pravus gone off the deep end. She thought she was making progress with him but... but he had tried to commit suicide.
"I'm useless and an idiot!"

Hatter held her tight, kissed her from time to time, but mostly he listened. He took in everything and fought quietly to make sense of this small tragedy she had endured.
He didn't doubt that she had done everything she could -- you didn't show this level of heartbreak about something you 'half-assed'. She shouldn't feel useless, or like an idiot. Never. It was so far from true that it hurt him just to know that she could ever imagine herself in a context such as that.
"Never, never..." He repeated, kissing her forehead and wiping away her tears. "You can't always help people, not in situations like that. You cared, but if he didn't...then there's nothing you can do. You weren't useless, he just didn't want to accept the help." Hatter's hands acted as if they had a life of their own, running over her back or moving through her hair ceaselessly. "Gone's not always a bad thing. If he's happy, wherever he is... Then it's not always a bad thing. Like, Marchie..."
Oh how hard it had been to watch his friend lose it and to know that his imbalance might be the death of him one day...but Marchie was happy still, and Hatter endured it for his sake.

They were words of comfort as she quietly sobbed in his arms. She felt miserable still, but Hatter was her Perfect Stranger. He knew the right things to say or do. He was someone she could break down in front of, even if she felt like a fool for giving up. Would she be able to recover this or would she have to bury it? She was tired of bury everything deep down, that's why she came to see Hatter. He was right... he was right but it still hurt so very much.
"It hurts though. It feels like I've had my heart ripped out of my chest." She muttered into his shirt. "Hatter... can I have some tea?"
Maybe that would make her feel better. The hug was working, but she needed something to clear her throat. Though she was happy snuggling against him. Involuntarily she was purring through all of the sobbing. Heat normally did that to her. "T-thank you Hatter."

Hatter wasn't sure about anything he was saying or doing. Crying always put him off guard, and the tears of those dearest to him broke his heart. He hated knowing she hurt like this, because his own heart throbbed for her and he wanted more than anything to engulf her in his affection and ease the pain away.
That, however much he wished it wasn't so, was impossible.
Just like reaching someone who didn't want to be reached, Hatter couldn't entirely erase the things which had hurt his dear Peaches so. He could try though, and he'd get damn close. As close as was possible for him, if nothing else.
"It'll feel like that for a while...but, it'll be okay. I hope. I don't know the situation well enough to say, I think..." He wouldn't give her false hope, he couldn't do that, but he could tell her the truth and he could love on her and, of course, he could get her tea. "Tea sounds wonderful, is there anything in particular you want?"
It was hard letting go of her, even if it was only to get tea, but he reluctantly drew away enough to see her tear-stained face. He kissed her lips deeply and when he pulled away he smiled warmly at her. "You're welcome, Peaches."

"Valentine," she whispered. It was her favorite tea, and honestly the only thing she could think of at a time like this. When she looked up at him she didn't expect the kiss, or the smile, or his response. She felt better though. So much better.
She reluctantly pulled away to let him get up. Using her sleeves she wiped away her tears as best as she could. Rolling them up she revealed her gloved hands. Taking them off without hesitation she sat them off the table. She didn't feel like fumbling with china today.
She watched Hatter leave the room, once he came back with the tea she would probably end up flopped on his lap again. It was comfortable there. It was nice having someone you could talk to and not be afraid of. That's what made a Perfect Stranger. A friend. Someone trust worthy. It was funny how it all started with her poking him.

Making tea was soothing. It always was. By the time he was done following all the usual tea-making rituals he followed, his head felt a little more connected to his body. He hadn't thought that seeing Peaches in tears would jolt him so, but it had. His heart throbbed in protest of this thought, his Perfect Stranger so upset, but he shook his mind of it and walked back into the sitting room where Peaches awaited him.
With the tray on the coffee table beside her gloves, which he noticed but didn't acknowledge aloud, Hatter poured Peaches a cup of tea and then filled his own glass before setting down beside her. The cup was in the hand farthest from Peaches, meaning that he could freely open the other and beckon her against him.
He wanted her near, so that he could protect her from whatever cruel thoughts haunted her. Useless... He couldn't believe she thought that, it was ridiculous and horribly sad. "How is it?"
