Sage squeaked. She hadn't expected that from either of her sisters. She was quite tempted to say something snarky back, but she'd learned her lesson after years of arguing with each other. She looked at Rosemary, who seemed to be twitching rather violently. What...?
"Get over yourself, Thyme. You look fine. Would I lie to you? Just because you look a little different it doesn't make you some horrible monster. In fact, it makes you special, and any idiot who tells you otherwise deserves a sword through their skull." Rosemary said in one long breath before giving a huff.
Sage blinked with surprise at Rosemary's statement. She normally didn't say things like that to Thyme. Maybe she should... try to help? "She's right you know, and if you get your human form won't it all go away? I can't imagine your tail would... uh... stay like that."

Thyme made an annoyed noise at Rosemary and thumped her tail hard against the bed. A cloud of dust poofed all around it. Her voice was sharp. "This. This is fine? Is it really? Rose, I'm so weird now that Aunt Josephine had to do tests on me to make sure I was still actually a Highlander! Which I am. I just don't really... look like one anymore." She wore a disgruntled expression. She had been so proud of her markings before. What a way to smack that pride in the face.
Sage just opening her mouth made the girl testy. There were too many years of dislike behind them, too many shared grudges, for her to appreciate any scrap of wisdom or advice that came from her silver-maned sister. "And that's the problem. We don't know. I could very well turn into a human and have these things sprouting from my tail bone like some sort of horrible plumage. My hair might have the same problem as my fur. We just won't know until I actually manage to get the form." Which Sage was a lot closer to than her. Nice reminder.

Rosemary gave a small growl. "Why yes, yes it is fine. Because you will always be Joe's favorite because of your Highland pride. You will always be a Highlander even if your colors are a little off. And you will always be Thyme. We'd love you no matter what happened to you, and I'm kind of sad you can't drop your pride for a few minutes to see that!"
It was rare to see Rosemary angry or frustrated, and Sage wasn't about to start anything. She just sat silently and looked at the two girls. Her ribbon gave her some small amount of comfort as she rubbed it between her fingers.
Rosemary gave a snort before shoving her face in her pillow. She wasn't supposed to get angry at people, she was supposed to be the happy and cheery one. Meh. Being frustrated at Thyme was completely knew. She turned her head to the side so she could properly look at both of her sisters. "You know, I'm just trying to make you feel better, because you need it."

Her sister being that tetchy drew Thyme up short a little bit. Actually growling at her... huh. Why was Rose reacting like that? It was kind of off-putting and unsettled her enough that she didn't say anything for a little while, just stayed flopped where she was and watched the two of them. Her sister was almost her double on the other side of the room in terms of pose.
"Well. Thanks, Rose. I appreciate the sentiment." Even though her assessment of the situation was far different from Thyme's, there was truth in what she said. Joe would never like Rosemary no matter what she did. That dislike was far too ingrained. Then again, the wolf didn't think her sister wanted to be liked by their aunt either, despite the fact that she most certainly did. Josephine's opinion meant a lot to her and she still wasn't sure where exactly it sat. The woman was being very tight-lipped on the matter. Thyme couldn't blame her.
Sage and her fiddling with the ribbon was thoroughly ignored.

"I'm not sure you do, but I'll just accept it and move on." Rosemary said as she glanced back at Thyme. Sometimes she had to wonder about her sister. She was so caught up with Josephine she didn't even realize how much the woman liked her. Just because she had green and bright blue didn't mean anything did it? Her coat was still rather fine looking. Weird, yes, but when had Weird been a bad thing. "Maybe we should just stop talking about it."
She would have said more, but she figured the phrase "White Elephant" would be a bad choice of description. She glanced over at Sage as she played with the ribbon. At least she hadn't tried to say anything helpful again.
Sage, however, did the only thing she really felt like doing. She sang rather quietly, if it annoyed Thyme it really didn't matter. "And your darkness speaks and has eyes to see...I know that you can win the, this lifelong game we're in...."
She started at the end of the song, so it wasn't long before she finished. Sage didn't look up at her sisters. She just absently undid her bun and went for her comb. Personally, she felt a bit better. They could continue their angst if they wanted to.

Thyme had enough of angsting. She was done with it for just then, more preoccupied by her annoyance at her sister's singing. Sage really did have a beautiful voice, but right now it really wasn't what the wolf needed to hear. She growled something quietly, not malicious but annoyed, and shoved her head under a pillow. That would effectively block out communication for a few minutes while she got her annoyance under control. Then she would be able to pull her head out and talk more normally.
- - -
Later that night, after dinner and after-dinner conversation and everyone had left to go do their own thing, Thyme walked quietly out of the room she shared with her sisters and towards the guest room. Sage was playing dolls with Mom, Alphonse was out hunting up some bloodier dinner, Rose had crashed early with the excuse that she'd been awake for her limit to walk there and she was beat, Dad was in his workshop... that left no one to come and pester her.
She knocked on the door and coughed quietly at the dust, which she still had to get used to. "Aunt Josephine? It's Thyme. I... have a quick question. Could I please come in?" Manners, it was all about manners...

Josephine had gone back to the guest room with every intention of reading somethings from her journals. She would supposedly have an interesting job prospect coming up that required gathering interesting information.
She was throughly surprised by the knock on the door. "Come in," she replied to the voice of her niece. What on earth could she want from her? Wasn't she going to spend time with her family or something? That's what you were supposed to do if you haven't seen your family for long periods of time? Well... she didn't count. It was difficult for her to come up with actual conversation with Kazifel that didn't dig up something horrible for either of them.
The older woman watched Thyme walk in. Shutting her book she placed it on the bed besides her. "What is it you want to ask me about?" Might as well get this over with.

Thyme appreciated the bluntness - it was normal, what she expected from her aunt, and it helped to put her at ease more than any side-stepping would have. She took a deep breath and walked in, closing the door behind her and sitting down to look up at the human woman laying on her bed.
"So, Aunt. I haven't been able to tell from your reactions, and we haven't really... talked about... this. Which I understand, I mean, it's horrible... but I really do need to know. Just so I can prepare myself. Will I be coming back with you to the Highlands? Or was part of the reason in bringing me back home to leave me here, now that I might not be a suitable heir anymore?"
She had no idea whether Josephine still thought her suitable or not. They hadn't talked about it at all. She'd been too scared to ask. But now, she felt that she really needed to. She couldn't stand not knowing anymore.

Josephine raised an eyebrow. What the hell? "Of course I'm taking you back? What on earth is wrong with you. You're a Highlander for the sake of the bloody suits! You shouldn't be whining just because your coat is just a little messed up." The woman was sitting up now, she had half a mind to walk over and smack the girl upside the head for her idiocy.
"If you weren't suitable I would have left you on my doorstep and been done with you. Now I suggest you leave and let me finish reading before you ask any other ludicrous questions." The Highlander picked up the book and went back to reading. She wasn't going to deal with a young woman who had no confidence in herself because of a little accident. She mentally rolled her eyes at the thought of leaving Thyme behind. She was the only possible heir to the name, and Josephine wasn't going to lose that.
