"Yes, my partner can't do math to save his life," Theo looked disappointed. He had no idea how anyone could find math so difficult that they couldn't add numbers while they were in a row. "And he's about as sociable as a rock. So he makes me do all the talking. I really just sits back and deals with the nobles, and even then... I have to do some of the work."
Wow. Now that it was brought up it seemed depressing that he did most of the work and had barely gotten paid for it his first few years of working. How did he have any time for anything else? He really needed an assistant.
"Pardon," said the waitress meekly, "Are you ready to order?"
Theofilus nearly feel out of his seat. He was so deep in thought he hadn't noticed the waitress. "Sorry," he apologized to her, "Um... I'm sure the young lady would like to order first. Unless that's too much pressure." he added. He didn't want to rush Kelasia--or anyone--for that matter.
The waitress had a surprised look on her face. She didn't seem certain of what to do besides look to Kelasia and ask, "Are you ready to order?"

Kelasia's jump was slightly less obvious as the bird had the waitress’ eyes, but the skunk’s attention had been entirely focused on Theofilus and their converstaion. While she couldn't judge for a dislike of math --she abhorred to cook-- she had trouble believing Theo had to do quite -so- much work and didn't already own the whole business. "Surely he does some of--" her question was preempted by the re-arrival of the waitress.
Oh! Yes! They were supposed to be making food choices. She had forgotten, again, that they were in a restaurant and needed to actually order something. "Oh, well," she stammered uneasily. "I'll, uhm, I'll have wotever he's having...." she finally said softly. It was a bit of a cop-out, but she'd barely perused the menu, even after all of the time they'd been there. It was easier (and likely safer for her taste buds) if she simply piggy-backed on the man’s order rather than choose something helter-skelter to avoid making the waitress wait any longer.

Choices, choices. Apparently he had to make a good one so the skunk would also have a wonderful meal. "I'll have the salad and the daily special," he smiled at the waitress, "Thank you."
The waitress smiled meekly and took the menus before skittering off to place the order.
He blushed under his feathers a bit as the waitress walked away. What had he been saying? He didn't remember, but she was probably going to defend her boss. "He used to do a lot of work when I was still an apprentice. Slowly but surly he piled the work on me because I was his most reliable assistant." He shrugged. "I was his only assistant in the end. He's a noble first, then he takes care of the trading business, you see."
Theofilus rolled his eyes, "The trading company was his father's business. The boy never wanted any part of it, so he's happy to give it to me once he gets married. It's stipulated that he can do such a thing in his father's will you see. Politics, all of it."
He sighed, "I sound like such a pompous ass. You have every reason to smack me if you like."
( <3 I have four chapters to read, and I have no intention of doing any of it this or next weekend. )

Kelasia listened with growing awe and interest. Theo had lived the most amazing life already! She knew he couldn't be that old; a surrepetitious glance reaffirmed that the male across from her was, indeed, very handsome. He had the most amazing markings and she would like to go and trace the colourful circular shapes. But that, however, was not only way too forward, but also completely out of her personality.
"Pompous--? No, no!" The skunk was swift to interject. And smack him! She blushed at the very thought of touching anyone, especially as she'd been just contemplating about his beautiful markings. No, no! Bad thought! Go somewhere else with the thoughts. Her mind went completely blank for a long moment before she just sort of blurted out her next words, "I think you did an excellent job and it's amazing that you were able to put up with everything to rise to a partner. It sounds like it was difficult just putting up with your partner." Just as suddenly she lost the wind in her sails as it struck her gain just how different their lives had been.
"You've had this wonderfully amazing life," Her voice was low and soft and her final words were nearly inaudible. "Everything mine is not."
She stared glumly at the table for a very long time before giving a shake of her head and sending her silver bangs in a light spray across her face and her pale eyes glanced up at Theo and back down at the table. "Uhm.. when is the wedding?" But her usual spark for questions seemed a bit dim as she fought to push away her depression.

He was blushing. It would probably show through his feathers too. It had been a while since he had blushed this badly. It was wonderful to have a nice proper conversation with someone who could appreciate you.
Theofilus took a deep breathe. "I'm sure your life is just as interesting. You just can't see it since it's your life. We all have interesting lives if you really think about out. Our stories are just different." He smiled.
Right. On to easier subjects, ones that wouldn't make the whole world blush. All right, their wedding. "It's an exactly a week away. It's going to be a huge and fantastic wedding back at the Lakes. They still haven't sent out all the invitations." That generally meant he wasn't invited yet. Everyone else in his family had gotten some form of an invitation except for him. He just got more business information to take care of.
Unfortunately his curiosity got the better of him, and the waitress was still busy getting the salads to interrupt. "You seem to be very sheltered, though I could be wrong... but I have to wonder, why did you choose to come to Capital City in your search? Couldn't you have found ambition in your home town? Or... did you just want to get away?"
He hoped this wouldn't be prying he was just curious about why a pretty and innocent girl would be out in this city looking for... well a future so far away from home.

Kelasia gave a small, negative shake of her head when he said her life was just as interesting. No, her story was different and it was dull. Even she knew that. But it was alright for him to try and be nice to her. In fact, it was very sweet of him.
"It sounds very exciting," Kelasia said of the upcoming wedding. Her thoughts went to wedding preparations and the like before his next words drew her out of a bubble of thought.
"Oh, well..." She wasn't entirely certain how to explain wot had happened and why she didn't really have any opportunities back home. Especially without besmirching her family's name. "There... aren't really a lot of... opportunities.. back home." How do you explain that your brother destroyed pretty well every chance of employment due to dropped committments and wotnot. "I thought the Capital would be a good place to find... my own ambition." Sub-text: And not the ambition of my family.

( *crosses fingers for signal strength and not getting annoyed at little things* )
Her family then? They were probably the pushy type. The type of people that Mirko's family tried to be, but so causally gave up hope of getting any higher in rank. Theofilus doubted that her family was close to giving up pressuring her, that would be a good reason to come to the City.
"Family then," he threw her a wink. "This is a good place to be "free" from my understanding."
He smiled, "Have you ever been to a wedding? I might just have to take you as my date." Theo actually had no idea if he was being serious or not. It had just floated out of his mouth without his permission. Once again, he felt the reminder of his socially awkward personality peaking out. Was he this idiotic when he had met Calia? Theofilus couldn't remember for the life of him. Everything worked out pretty well there, he was sure...
The salad was placed with a nice clink in front of each of them. The waitress smiled at them both and took her leave. Theofilus took this opportunity to take a few bites of his salad before continuing his conversation. "Have any wedding bell dreams in your future?"

Date?! Kelasia's mind squeaked at her again and this time she flushed abruptly and completely. She was still fighting the overtones of that word until, fortunately!!!!, the waitress came with their salads. Dates and weddings and handsome birds were overwhelming her. She sent their waitress a relieved, thankful smile for saving her from having to reply.
She had taken two bites of her salad and had just stuck the third in her mouth when he asked of weddings in her future. Kelasia nearly spit the crispy greens in shock. She swallowed hard, coughing hard and quickly going to take a deep sip of her water. "M-m-m-me? No, no, no..... No." She realized she was shaking her head violently and made a concentrated effort to stop. "No," she finally continued softly. "No one would want that with me." Recovered from her initial shock, she didn't sound upset by this bland prediction, simply resigned to her future.

Ow. That was low self esteem right there. My goodness, what had her family done to her. He hadn't meant to freak her out, he felt sort of bad. Then again he thought that most women had dreams of wedding bells someday. He had never seen someone nearly have a conniption over it.
Theofilus took a deep sip of water before speaking again. "You shouldn't down yourself so much. It's not like you're an Ace. M-my brother was an Ace and he didn't have a chance. And worst of all I couldn't do anything to help him...."
He took a deep breathe. Recalling his brother was horrible, he tried to keep all of that locked away. He always felt guilty when he thought about him, but there really was nothing he could have done. They were only children. "Unlike him, you have a hope for a bright future. Never think anything is hopeless. There's someone out there for you and you'll eventually find your calling. Never think so little of yourself when you have such potential," he gave a reassuring nod to himself more than any one else.
Wow, their conversation had it rock bottom depressing in record timing. "I apologize, I didn't mean to bring things down like that. You shouldn't think so low of yourself, though. I'm sorry, I really am."
