An Ace for a brother? Wow... She would not want to be that low. But as for her own bright future? It really wasn't all of that bright, despite Theo's example and point. He had already cheered her up a great deal in regards to her ambition and she thought she actually had a chance of finding employment. Her thoughts turned almost wistfully to his earlier comment that he was looking for an assistant.
Despite his final comment, Kelasia really -wasn't- as depressed as she could be; in fact, this wasn't even the most depressed she'd been throughout their conversation. "You have nothing to apologize for," the skunk offered softly, pale eyes shifting up from the table to regard him for a moment before they slipped demurely away again. "I know you mean well and you've already given me so much hope about... things. I do feel as thought I can find a job now and, maybe from there my own ambition will become more clear." She hoped that helped reassure him. She didn't think it would be wise to talk about relationships any further, not with wot she knew and he, evidently, did not.
She wasn't pretty, her mother had told her so. According to her family, except a few times when she'd just been a kit, she hadn't even been cute. Those few times it was mentioned had been others being kind. As she grew older, all she ever heard was how dumb she looked, how worthless. So she knew she wasn't anything special to look at. Her personality was sub-par at best; she -knew- she had low self-confidence and the books she'd read on the subject said that it would come through in her interactions with everyone. So wot hope did someone as undesirable as her have in a lasting relationship? Statistically nil. Her mother had often told her the best she could hope for was a few short-term relationships for the purpose of having kits--she would NOT let her thoughts flash to Theofilus--and that she'd better make sure they were good babies. So, that's wot she was hoping for.
Never, however, would it occur to her to say any of this to Theo.

"Pretty women never know when they're pretty," Theofilus said flatly. It was the truth as far as he was concerned. All or the women he had ever met, coy or not, have never admitted they were pretty. He could never fathom why they would think such things.
On to brighter things, however. "I imagine you've been looking for books in this big city? Want some directions to some books stores and some libraries? I just got a few directions from my friend, and the business messenger who comes here often enough." They were reliable sources, at least that is what he had experienced.
He picked at his salad a bit more. Where had his appetite gone? Probably with the mood of the conversation. Stupid depressing things making him revert back to childhood. He watched as the waitress returned with the special. It was some sort of large soup with the steam still coming off of it. She slipped the bowls next to their salads and darted off without a word.
"How about we become pen pals?" He tilted his head in a bird like fashion, "I'm curious to know how your quest goes."

Kelasia's ears flattened backwards just a tad more at Theo's tone and she inwardly kicked herself for not just agreeing with wot he said so he wouldn't be upset. Not, she felt, that he wouldn't have gotten upset if she'd done that and he had known it. There was just no winning some battles, but all the skunk really wanted was to make Theofilus happy again.
"Oh, yes, libraries would be wonderful," she answered fervently, her interest in books coming through despite her uneasiness about their conversation. When he began to pick at his salad, she did the same, wary of eating when he wasn't, though she was still rather hungry as the food's arrival had reminded her.
"That would be nice," Kel answered about the pen pals suggestion. Though she thought he had mentioned potential employment, she assumed she had misunderstood or, more likely, as he got to know her he'd realized she wasn't worth investing his company's time and money into. Oddly or not, this didn't depress her as it usually did; she -liked- Theofilus and didn't want to chance wasting any of his resources.

"Of course, I would hope you'd end up working in capital city as my correspondent. You know, a part time job to help my business out if you ever feel so inclined. The door is always open, you just have to tell them you know me," he smiled, "I'll have to show you where it is before we part ways." And he hoped they wouldn't part ways so soon. It had been a while since he met such an engaging young woman.
"There are four or five public libraries that I know of. I've only been to one. It's the Capital Public Library. A large place that is painted silver, oddly enough. It's not far from here actually, it's a reasonable distance away, I could show you after our meal, If you want that is."
Theofilus eyed his meal as he spoke. He should try his hand at the soup before giving up entirely. He leaned forward and sipped the steaming liquid, which burnt his tongue causing him to shrink back with tears in his eyes. "Hoooot," he muttered while looking at Kelasia with the most pitiful face he could muster before laughing at himself. "Careful you don't burn yourself."
(( OOC: Theo talks to much. But whatever. <3 *lots of hugs for Sera* ))

Wait, so was he offering her a job or not? The skunk couldn't tell and she was rather afraid of just asking; would it be rude to presume an appointment? Surely he didn't actually want to hire -her-. Though she wouldn't mind working for him, she was certain, but she didn't want to mess up his business. She was quiet for a long moment as she tried to work her way through her confused thoughts.
Ironically or not, Theo's burnt tongue helped bring her back into the conversation and she surprised herself, and perhaps him, with a quiet giggle. "You...." she giggled again. "You hooted. ... I thought owls hooted..." She flushed as another giggled escaped. "I would love to see the libraries; any of them, really."
(( *snugs* i'm so sorry, Kari; things are just... baddish right now. ><; ))

Theo couldn't help but laugh. "Well, I'm a new breed of sparrow! One that can go hoooot when their tongue is burnt," he snorted as his laughter calmed down. That was probably the single most interesting thing he had heard in a long time.
"I would be lost without libraries," he said, still with a numb tongue stumbling slightly over his words.
He would be lost without libraries. He probably wouldn't have been able to acquire any of the knowledge he had without them. He probably never would have been able to work for his firm without the knowledge he had attained from the books he bought off the library when they were "too battered" and unwanted.
"I'll give you a job if you want one, you seem a more than capable person," he said suddenly. He wanted to give her a clear opportunity to accept or refuse one. It was the least he could do--give someone else a chance. Though he wasn't sure if she was willing to take up the challenge.
(OOC: <3 It's okay, I'm in no hurry. ^_^ *hugs you again* Take all the time in the world)

With his example, Kelasia was careful to blow gently on her soup before sipping it with caution. She blinked, surprised but pleased with the excellent taste. She hesitated completely for a full thirty seconds, working to keep her expression neutral, though Theo could porbably read the embarrassment, discomfort, then indecision. It wasn't that she didn't -want- the position, but she'd convinced herself she would be no good for him. But... Theofilus was so nice and so knowledgable about everything here; she could learn so much under his tutelage. And it would mean she wouldn't have to go back home.
"I would love to work under you..." she finally said hesitantly. "But are you sure I'm the best choice? I don't know anything about shipping and, and..." She couldn't think of any further way to explain why she was so useless, at least partially because she had a feeling it would only anger the bird.

Theofilus thought for a while taking a sip or two of his soup before answering her question in the best way possible. "You don't need to know everything yet. At the moment we need someone to sort all of the paperwork that comes in and out, so we can double check our numbers. Eventually you would learn thing just by dealing with the members of the staff."
He hesitated. He had faith in her and her skill. He honestly did, he just didn't feel right giving her such a simple job. Then again, simplicity was sometimes the answer. "By sorting all of the paperwork out you can at least get an understanding of what we have to go through. Once you understand that, the other stuff is simple. It's just an entry level job, but we do need someone to do it since we don't have a hundred hands, so to speak."
He sighed, "You're not obligated to take the job if you think it isn't good enough, but I have to say you're more qualified than any of the people applying for the job. None of them--not a single one--is curious enough to ask questions. They just want to climb up the ladder without asking how they can make things better or why things work. Curiosity is needed to be successful, Kelasia."

Well, curiousity she had in droves; it was about the only thing she had going for her. That and, well, through the years she'd gotten pretty good at looking things up. And, if his list of qualified candidates truly was so abysmal, then she couldn't feel bad taking the position. She might not be the best choice, but for wotever reason the best choice evidently wasn't applying.
"No, it sounds... it sounds..." Pale eyes slowly came up from her bowl to trail up to Theofilus' face. "It sounds just about perfect." She could only meet his gaze for a moment before she had to look away again, but there was no hiding the small smile that quirked her mouth as the first feeling of real happiness began to drizzle through her. She was on her way to finding her ambition, right? And she had done it all on her own. Well, obviously Theo was helping, but she hadn't relied on any (tainted) family connections, as she was beginning to fear. She just might actually have a chance.
