Anubis snarled, and watched as his ability took hold. He remembered his bindings, remembered how much he had hated them. The Jack got a sick sort of satisfaction by multiplying that hate and throwing it back at others whom he hated. However, his smug look was slowly erased by horror as the fresh stump transformed. Who . . WHAT. . was this thing he was fighting!?
"What magics. . .?" It was wrong, so very wrong. No rabbit should EVER even vaguely resemble Cards. Wretched, dirty, disgusting cards. And here the Jack in front of him now proudly sported a piece of one as his own.
His shock turned dangerous as the mad Jack lunged forwards, curse him not having pants, and drove his newly taloned hand straight into Anubis' chest. His eyes widened as he felt the hand force through flesh. . .that didn't feel right.
Anubis did the only thing he could think of in such close quarters and tried to twist away from the other Jack (20) and kicked with his hind legs, attempting to connect with the other males chest (6). He shouldn't have thrown his weapon. . . amateur.
Dafina watched in stunned silence for a moment as Aleah left her side. First her Father, now Aleah? NO, she couldn't have both of them in danger. "Aleah!" She hissed, scared to draw any more attention. ". .Please!" Tears sprang to her eyes. Fina cursed herself for being weak, but damn it all, she needed SOMEONE to be safe.

Maeve slowed as she neared the stairwell, muscles twitching with unease. Voices drifted up from below, and her ears twitched forward; she couldn’t make out much, beyond the word “Argo” and another that sent her scrambling backwards: “Cards”.
Maeve remembered the creature that had burst out of the Doe; the smoke creatures that looked suspiciously of the same ilk; the insane Jack, muttering about a man in the basement. Had it been Cards behind it--everything---all along? What could possibly be the motivation? There was only one way to discover the truth, and Maeve took one trembling step forward. Another. Until she was at the very top of the stairs, staring into the dark, and the wan light coming distantly from below.
A crash from behind made her jump, spinning with her tail poised to strike. She jerked when she saw who it was.
“Shelby…?” Maeve whispered, fur standing straight up. Something was wrong. Very, very wrong. “Are you all right?” She took a hesitant step forward, twitching with trepidation, another half-step. Shelby’s entire form began to shiftchangeohwhiterabbitno.
“What’s happening? What did you touch!?” she wailed, torn between concern for her--friend? were they friends? allies, certainly--and the urge to run. But there was nowhere to run.
"Shelby," she whispered again, agonized, and took another step forward. It was different than with the rest. Shelby was useful, and listened to her. She shivered unhappily.

What… was going on? Aleah paused, watching in horror as the Jack -regrew- a hand. The dark and swirling magic around it seeming so very wrong in every way. He froze, staring. The man was suddenly being bound by his own clothing, no doubt a spell from Anubis. This was his chance! His muscles tensed, paws flexing…
But there was his name being called, He bared his teeth, immediately annoyed by the interruption. Looking over his shoulder, what he saw gave him a reason for pause. Crying. She was crying.
He reacted immediately, spinning away from the fight and back into the room. The Jacks were distracted. Now was as good a time as any to get Dafina out.
Damnit. He wanted to kiss her. But now was not the time.
"We're going." He hoped the authority would carry the wait it should, staring at Dafina with intensity before turning to the other does. "The rest of you, come on. We need to get to safety while those two fight it out."
Banvyne scoffed from her corner, having taken to chewing on a scone while the proceedings took place. "And why should we listen to you, leveret?"
"Because if you don't and Anubis loses this fight.. you may very well end up a very dead Doe."
She stopped chewing, her nose screwing up in such a way as if she'd smelled something dead.
"Fine then, you little peon. Lead me to safety."
Hm. A change of heart. Perhaps it was a survival instinct kicking in.
Layla blinked, looking around. Some of the leverets had moved on elsewhere, and she hadn't known where they'd went. She looked around, desperate. It seemed she'd be grouping together with the miserable Doe and the ragged looking leveret, then. That intense look she gave the other Doe… it made her feel rather strange. Was… she in fact a he?

A horrible wave of uncertainty washed over her when the mad Jack looked at her, but he agreed to her request and released the leveret. She was about to gesture him away when suddenly the Jack from before was back, and distracted the sickly one away from, well.... everyone. She just sort of .... stayed where she was for a moment, the tension and the strangeness getting to be a little much for her.
The mad Jack poked his head back in and she backed away, toward the Madame again. and that leveret with the claws, he moved over to wait at the edge of the shadows. Was it going to attack as well? She watched him closely, ignoring Dafina for the moment. Her tears seemed to bring the leveret out of his death wish and the way he looked at her made her almost... jealous. Yes, she was quite certain that leveret was a male, and also quite certain that Dafina was something he wanted.
On one level was inspired jealousy, on another.... that leveret would be a Jack one day.... and that made the look terrifying and something she herself didn't' want. It was a terribly confusing place ot be mentally, to want to be loved, but not loved.
However, she did want to get out of here., more then anything actually. She turned her gaze to the Madame, mentally trying to will her to cooperate, and, surprisingly, she did.
She took a few steps back toward Aleah and nodded ever so slightly to him.
The quicker the better.

As Shelby sprinted past the Jacks, entirely blocking out their fight, he suddenly felt his body convulse and twitch, and his next attempted leap flipped him completely over, spasming there on the ground, helpless. Pain wracked his body, and he opened his mouth in a silent scream, eye shutting tight and paws trying to press at his chest, as if that would make the horrible pain go away. He'd never been in this much pain before, and his vision went white for a moment, aware of nothing else.
When it was finally over, and he lay there, panting, paws grasping at his chest and ears splayed out on the ground...Slowly, he opened his eyes, and saw Maeve, staring at him in a way that made him instantly on guard. "Wh-what?" he asked, voice trembling, and tried to get up. Something felt wrong...he felt unbalanced, odd. His paws didn't feel right, like they were angled wrong. His tail whipped out to balance him, and his wings...wings?
Wings?!
Shelby slowly turned his head to look at himself...and stared. He stood up, feeling tall, and gangly, and awkward. But...somehow it felt more natural now than being on four paws. This was...this was. He looked at Maeve, eyes wide with horror. "I...I just drank...the label said..." He swallowed, feeling the lingering sweet taste in the back of his mouth turn to bile. His paws...his tail...wings...everything was so wrong now! What -was- he? He felt so stupid. Why had he believed the label of that little bottle? He edged a bit closer to Maeve, look pleading. "I didn't know! Let's just....let's..." He despaired, seeing the look in her eyes. Was she...afraid of him, now? His long ears twitched, picking up the sounds from the stairs behind them more clearly. And it sounded like...had they said something about...Cards?
Oh by the White Rabbit, -what- was going -on- around here?

(("Argo! Argo! Are you in there?" A voice queried, and if Maeve glance back down the staircase, she would see what looked like the long end of what certainly wasn't a Rabbit Muzzle, sticking into the spot of light down there. The mad Jack gave a loud whine when his rival twisted away, only just leaping out of the way of the long hind legs and trying to land a kick of his own on the others newly wounded chest, though he mostly caught the golden armor instead. (8) Toes throbbing, his remaining ear suddenly stiffened and flicked back, eyes going wide and his mouth dropping open as he cried back. "Yes? Yes, I'm still down here!" Seeming to panic for no other apparent reason, he lashed out with the scalpel, though it seemed to be a nearly defensive move, and fled back down the hall toward Shelby and Maeve, completely missing and ignoring the Highland Leveret sneaking in the other direction toward the front door with his Does. Fight gone from him, he ran pell-mell, tripping over Shelby and sprawling flat on his face, the scalpel sticking in the ground half an inch from the Selkie mix's head, and leaving the weapon there (for either Shelby or Maeve, take your pick, though Shelby does have a letter opener.), still running, running, running toward the door.
"I'm here! I'm here! Don't forget me, Zach? Zach?! I'm Argo!" Hitting the door with an incredible thud, he scrambles through it, shutting it behind him, though they can hear him leaning against it on the other side, not yet going up to Gigi's voice, breathing heavily.))

Whatever was going on, Aleah didn't have time to process it. He nodded in agreement with the Midrange Doe and led the charge.
The Jack was scrambling away; all the better for him to get away. He stood, fur bristled to make sure the Jack did not attack them as the Does made their way past the carnage. Back to the front. His ears were perked forward, nose as alert as the perpetually fatigued leveret could be in such a situation to find their means of escape. The door, perhaps? Or not? It had seemed to be truly sealed shut. It was worth a try. He rushed to the door. If he managed to get to it uneventfully, he'd try to open it.(14)
Layla brought up the rear, skittering past the fighting Jacks with no small amount of horror. Blood was everywhere! They were both missing ears! Her bone wings clacked anxiously as she followed, being sure to stay out of Banvyne's way. The Doe seemed to be absolutely out to get her, and she was not keen to forget the attempted swipe at her even in the midst of chaos.

Maeve stood undecidedly in place, biting her lip and trying desperately to stop trembling. Whatever Shelby had become, he certainly wasn’t a Rabbit anymore. But he wasn’t exactly a Card, either. He was some horrible, unnatural combination of both. An abomination. Mismatched parts, cobbled back together into something else.
In any other circumstance, Maeve would have run, but she’d spent an indefinite, nightmarish period of time being transported about against her will via mysterious whirlwind, been attacked by smoke creatures, watched Rabbits burst open in an unnatural giving of life, and briefly been in the service of a deranged Jack. She considered this newest event in light of these other experiences, categorizing mismatched limbs--perhaps a bit awkward, but the versatility might prove advantageous in a fight--and what little she knew of Shelby. She took a deep breath, and nodded.
Shelby’s eyes were still the same, and he looked terrified. That was enough for Maeve. They would figure out the rest--later.
“Come on, let’s just--” Maeve squeaked at Shelby was barreled over, the deranged Jack making a sudden, and unwelcome appearance. Her eyes widened when she saw the scalpel, so close to maiming, killing. But the Jack didn’t seem to notice them at all, scrambling for the door and slamming it shut behind him. The scalpel was still stuck in the floor.
She looked at Shelby with wide-eyes, not exactly certain how to proceed or what to say. She sat, shakily, for lack of anything else.
((I suppose Maeve will take the scalpel, unless you want it, Lucca? I'm pretty up in the air about it, really. Maeve will predominantly use her tail to fight, regardless, and now that Shelby has the potential to dual-wield... just let me know. : ) ))

It was a long, tense moment that seemed to last an eternity, like the period just before getting yelled at by his Mom, except much, much worse. If Maeve rejected him...if she decided he was an abomination and no longer a Rabbit...well, he didn't really know what he'd do. It didn't help that he could already see the horrified look in the eyes of his Mom and his sister and his Dad when they saw his new form...it wasn't a hard thing to imagine, sadly.
Shelby was sure the look would be on his face, as well, if he happened upon a mirror right now. Finally, though, the look in Maeve's eyes changed, and her voice, while more high-pitched than it had been, was better than before. He nodded, letting out a breath--and then squeaked as he was thrown to the ground again in a tangle of awkward limbs. He blinked blearily, and froze as there was a scalpel, still dripping with blood, less than two inches from his nose.
He scrambled gracelessly backwards, and then around the thing towards Maeve. He looked to her for guidance, for some idea of what to do, but she seemed just as lost as he was. He glanced at the now-closed door, where this Jack...Argo...was now panting. "Should we...follow him or...?" he whispered, ears twitching. But there might be Cards over there...and...he hugged himself, small wings flapping nervously.
((you can take it. Shelby wouldn't really think about it, tbh. XD))

finally, someone else acknowledged her without the suspicion or fear that some of the others had at first. Although this leveret very definitely hadn't been there when she was... er ... born. Still, it made her feel a little better about the situation and she followed him, keeping her eyes on the blackness ahead of them instead of letting it wander anywhere near the Jacks.
They were going to get out of here, everything was going to be fine and then she could start trying to put some sort of life together. She didn't have much, did she? She had her health, so far, and her adornments.... but she didn't even have a name. She felt the guilt swimming up again and managed to push it down in time to stop near the door as Aleah tried to open it again. Please let this work!
As he fiddled with the door she kept her mind off of things by trying to decide a name for herself, like Madame Banvyne had. She definitely didn't have the persona to pull off a name quite like that, she needed something a little less... haughty.
Calista, that sounded nice. Pretty, simple and fairly short. She rather liked it and it just felt.... right.
