He nodded his head to show that a nap did indeed sound like the thing he needed. ~ Sitting at the fire with Elias and Whip the mouse shifted his position once again. He just could not get comfortable. The child had been really active recently, shifting and kicking, and the mouse was getting fed up. Surely there had to be some way that he could tell the kid to keep still. Not to mention his back had started to hurt this morning, though this pain seemed to come and go, seriously, could it not make up its mind? Shifting himself once again he muttered, “I suppose neither of you have any more of those pain medication? This backache just seems to be persistent in plaguing me, though it does not seem to be able to make up its mind if it will stay or go.”~ Well bloody charcoal bits! That was definitely one experience that he never wanted to face, ever again. Lying back against the pillows that had been placed behind him to prop himself up, the mouse gave a weary sigh. Well at least it was done. Closing his eyes he was content to just lie there, all of his energy spent from the long hours of labor he had been plagued with. A small wail came from the other side of the cabin. After a moment the mouse finally asked, “How is he?”

A slap sounded and a wail keened through the cabin before Rai announced, "Well, he -is- alive." At least there was that, right? The stallion didn't sound much less weary, which was rather ironic as he certainly did a lot less of the work. Still, for the specialty midwife the equine had run point for his friend, bringing boiling water and towels and wot not. It had been a long run and he almost had a tiny bit more sympathy for Mnem and Minh now. Sort of. The problem was that women were created to do that and men were not. Poor Aderlass.
The woman's mouth was a thin, disapproving line as she brought the hybrid baby out to his 'mother' to see. A wet nurse waited in the next cabin, and someone would fetch her in a few minutes. The stallion came over to watch the 'reunion' curiously and the midwife sent him a sad, pitying look. Now in human form to help fetch items, it took the stallion a -very- long moment before he realized wot her expression meant.
Oh, snot; she thought they were lovers and this was, supposedly, half his. But the baby obviously didn't look anything like the horse and a lot like his 'daddy' was someone else entirely. Rai wasn't sure if he should correct her or just let it stand.

Elias brought in a sleep aid for the Queen of Clubs. He deserved it, and he wouldn't put the baby in danger by taking it. "Drink this. It tastes pretty bad without some mint to wash it down, but it acts faster this way. I figure after what you just went through, a little bad taste is nothing. No, Whip, I'm not helping build an immunity to anything," he added with a scowl at the horse, in case there was even a question. "You can check it yourself if you want."
He seemed oblivious to the looks of the nurse, but in fact he was pretty amused by them. He considered mentioning to Rai in a concerned voice, "I'm sure there's a good reason he doesn't look like you," but decided against it. He would probably think of something better later.
He walked over to look at the baby who had now been cleaned up and dried. "That's. . .that's a baby all right." He thought it might at least be cute now, but all babies were cute. It'd be interesting to see how the kid looked when he had his growth.

Holding the child he was a little surprise to see what it was that he had been carrying around for nine months. He was oddly taken by the babe who now looked up at him and waved his fists. He noted then ‘K’ on the child’s chest as well. He should not really be surprised he supposed, considering both parents had been of high rank.
Missing the look that passed between the nurse and his friend as well, he looked up to see Elias entering the cabin. Handing the child who he had decided to name Ignatius to Whip he took the potion gratefully. Making a face as he drank from it he found that sleep did soon consume him.
~~
Having mostly recovered from the birthing the Queen of Clubs sat besides the fire, seriously discussing what to do with his son.
“Actually . . . if it was not too much to ask . . . I was hoping that both Elias and yourself would not mind raising him. I do not mean as if to push the responsibility off, only that it is more then apparent that the two of you know more about surviving both out here and in the Courts then I am. This would seem to be his best chance at being successful in whatever he chooses to do with his life.”
He was really hoping that his son would decide to join the Court when he was older, though he was by no means going to push it on his son.
His son. That was such an odd thought. Of course he had Hadyn but their relationship had never been all that good. He was going to do better this time around.

If you want him turning out like Whip, El thought but very carefully didn't say. He had suspicions that Rai would answer for him either way. He would abide by it for now because he trusted the stallions judgment, even if he did slap him in the mouth later.
He was interested in what Rai would say. This was an even bigger favor than keeping the baby a secret. In theory the Queen of Clubs would owe them an equal favor in return, and having someone like that owe you a favor was always a good thing. More importantly, though, the two of them were friends, and Rai was probably one of the most loyal Cards Elias knew when it came to his friends.
The great surprise would come if Rai turned Aderlass down, but even then, there would be a good reason. If he had that sort of pity, he might feel sorry for Rai, because he'd get an earful from the canine no matter what the answer to this question was.

Actually, if it's not too much to ask... Rai gave a low snort of amusement at his friend's question. How does one answer that? -Of course- it was too much to ask, but that didn't really matter in the least. Someone had to care for the child and after all of the work keeping the pregnancy secret, they could hardly just turn around and throw it to the wolves of the Court, now could they? No their hooves and paws were distinctly tied on this.
The stallion didn't let any of that show on his face, however; instead he gave a small, bright grin. "I think we could arrange something there," the man answered easily. And they would. After all, Aderlass was -the- Queen of Clubs and he needed to get his Court in order. They could do the 'simple' part of raising a child until he was old enough and smart enough to survive not only the Marsh but politics as well.
He changed the subject abruptly. "An told me you were sneaking in conversations." He gave the mouse a disapproving stare, not that he knew it would make any difference. He'd been fairly certain the mouse would pull something like this and he was simply relieved that the baby hadn't suffered any consequences. Still, if he'd been a little, an air of unease would likely come over the man. "How's the Court?" There had been some uneasy rumours the last time he'd been back and while he certainly didn't want to send his friend off just a few days after birthing, most women took at least two weeks of rest, he also didn't want Aderlass to face an uprising in his Court.

He gave an appreciative smile to the horse. He was more then aware that he was asking a lot of his friend but he fully intended to make sure that the repayment benefited the equine.
“I really appreciate it. I want to make sure that he gets a better chance then I had.” he replied, giving a glance back to the cabin where the lad lay sleeping now. He was not intending for his friend to raise the lad, per say, but more as a training. After all he wanted to be a big part of his son’s life. This might also allow his son to have a more open mind on topics that had recently been brought to his attention of being a problem in views.
At the mention of his nightly conversations the mouse scratched the back of his head in embarrassment. “You heard about that?” He asked a little shocked, but not really surprised, to find out that his friend had learned about that. “Everything is going smoothly. No one seems to be eyeing the spot and she has been keeping me up to date on the bigger things that have been happening.” His conversations had mostly been limited to about ten minute conversations, so it had not been all that draining on him.

El was glad to know what he would have to yell at Whip about now. He had hoped for more time in the Courts, since he wasn’t quite in the danger he had been exposed to before, but it looked like he’d be in hiding for a while. He wondered how exactly the baby would be received at the court, given its resemblance to a couple of Queens of the Court. Well, it wasn’t for him to worry about. None of it was, at this point. Whip had said something could be arranged, and that meant negotiations, so nothing was set in stone.
He was a little surprised about the fact that nobody was gunning for the top spot. It made sense when he thought about it, though. He knew that he wouldn’t want to be burned to death by the mouse. That would seem to be a good deterrent. It had sounded like a hard fight, and flashy, which would help make people leery. He didn’t aspire to power or duels, but he always planned to finish off any challengers as painfully as possible. Fewer people want to fight against odds like that.

"She happened to know something that we had not yet discussed," the stallion replied drolly to Aderlass' question. "After several months it was bound to happen." The stallion pursed his lips. He trusted An to know the state of the Court; that was her job, after all. Rai gave a sudden nod of his head. All right, then that meant Aderlass could get the rest he needed. It was a relief to know that. "I have to return in a few days," he continued lightly. "It might be best for you to return at that time. I won't be able to get back again for another few weeks."
Which would, of course, leave Elias in charge of little Ignasi in both of their absences. Of course, Aderlass could contact El at any time, and, if needed, let Rai know that something was going on. They could keep this well covered and taken care of.
