"You shouldn't put anything in a strong tea if you want it to work properly," Rogers said with a nod.
"I somehow--"
"You drink your tea," Rogers growled. "You're a big boy you can take your medicine without watering it down."
Theofilus really didn't want to argue with the man when he was like this. Rogers could be quite a motherly figure when he felt like it. He had already heard most of the story, sheerly because he was the one in the apartment when Eilwyn had first arrived. The sparrow shook his head as he continued to sip the bitter tea. It really was quite awful. He looked to Kelasia. In all of the conversations they had, he never really knew about her past, and she didn't know that much about his. Maybe that should change?
Was the sparrow even brave enough to do such a thing? "You know, Kelasia, growing up I didn't have a perfect family. I suppose I'm thankful to have such a large and happy one now. I'm glad you're a part of it."
Apparently that was as close as he could get. He had to work on that.

The blue skunk fought the desire to giggle at Rogers’ ‘ferocity’ as he bullied Theofilus into taking care of himself. The German Shepherd really was such a blessing to them. She took another sip of her tea, mind wandering again for a moment and her face grew serious, reflecting the turn of her thoughts.
Wot could all of this mean for their relationship? Wot did it mean for Theofilus’ children? His work here and at the Palace? The bird was coping well, evidently, but would he fold beneath the pressure of his now high-stress life? The skunk didn’t think so; Theofilus was quite strong and she believed full-heartedly in him.
Kelasia smiled lightly at the bird when he spoke to her again, though her pale blue eyes might give away her faint bafflement. ”I am pleased to be considered one of your family, Theofilus,” she said quietly in answer. ”I can’t begin to tell you how much both of you mean to me.” She sent Rogers a small smile as well.

Theofilus smiled. Okay, maybe he did something at least a little right. That was a reassurance. He let out a sigh of happiness. He really had no words to say. He was simply cheerful in this brief moment of clarity. Kelasia had made him smile, that was good enough for him.
"Kel," Rogers grinned, "You really have no idea how important you are to the family." He sent a wink at her. He doubted she would catch on. It was obvious how the bird felt about her... it was the way he wanted Theofilus to think of him. Can't have everything yet though. "You know, I put some cookies in your pantry upstairs, want me to get them?"
"Don't you have some behind the counter?" Theofilus asked with his eyes closed as he took another sip and grimace of the bitter tea.
Rogers blinked. "You've been in my stockpile?"
"Apparently? I didn't know I wasn't supposed to know where the cookies were." Theofilus shrugged and looked over to Kelasia, "Did you know where they were?" Cookies were a good enough tangent for Theofilus. As long as they stayed away from serious topics just a bit longer he wouldn't shatter into a thousand pieces.

Kelasia gave another soft giggle at the two men; briefly surprised by her deep-set contentment in this setting. She’d never really been comfortable around men but somehow Theofilus and Rogers were different. She gave a small smile into her tea, before pale eyes flicked back up as she laughed gently again at the bickering. She was, as the canine had guessed, oblivious to anything beyond friendship towards her from the avian, despite her wishes to the contrary.
She tried to assume an innocent expression, as Theofilus’ attention turned to her in regards to Rogers’ cookies. Her wide eyes and the laughing expression within them disagreed with her words. ”I know nothing about cookies behind the counter,” she said innocently. ”But I do think the cookies from the pantry sound good.” She rose to fetch them herself, leaving the two men briefly alone as she trotted upstairs to fetch the desired snacks.

Rogers looked horribly disappointed. Fine he would move his cookie stash, that way none of them would know where it was. He shook his head and turned to Theofilus when Kelasia ascended the stairs. "Not telling her the whole truth? Don't you think she needs to know?"
Theofilus frowned. Damnit Rogers. You had be listening the entire time hadn't you? You heard everything didn't you? He looked at the canine, still frowning. "You know, I don't think I want to put her through that. She obviously has her own problems to deal with she doesn't need mine to worry over."
Rogers tilted his head. "But she is family."
The sparrow let out a faint sigh. Rogers was more than a brother, that was for sure. How had the canine gotten to know him so well? Was Theofilus really that transparent? Was he really that lost that he couldn't hide what he was really feeling? "True. Which is why I'm going to protect her from this. Now drink your tea, it's probably cold by now." Theofilus took another sip of his tea. So bitter.

”I found them,” the woman announced softly as she came back into the room, oblivious to the conversation she had missed. One look at Rogers’ face, however, told her something had happened. She sent him a concerned look before glancing back at Theofilus. She wasn’t certain if she should pry or simply leave it alone.
She moved to the table and began to arrange the cookies on the plate she brought with her from upstairs. Staring down at the plate, she finally asked softly, ”Is…. Everything all right?”
There. She had asked, but it gave the men the option to not explain; perhaps it had nothing to do with her or their overly serious discussion today. Perhaps it was something entirely unrelated. She hoped. Desperately. Her heart ached for all that Theofilus had suffered so far and she simply wanted things to go easy and right for him for awhile. Or forever.

"No actually. Nothing is right. But that's okay for now. Everything will eventually be fixed. It's just going to take some time had hard work." Theofilus smiled weakly. It was about time he said at least one thing that was truthful.
He leaned back in the chair he had taken a seat in to drink his tea. He looked at Kelasia. "I'm sorry. That's all I can really say. Words can't describe it anymore." His smile faded with those words. He wish he could tell her the whole truth--Rogers didn't even know the whole story. Why was it so difficult to be honest with the people he cared about? He shook his head in dismay. Taking another sip of his tea he looked over at the disappointed Rogers.
"Since we have cookies, I think there's still more to this conversation." Rogers shot a look at his employer.
Theofilus blinked, "I never properly congratulated you on your biped form, did I? Kelasia, I'm sorry about what happened. I would have been more careful... and I really shouldn't have taken attention away from your accomplishment." He blushed slightly.

Kelasia couldn’t return the smile, heart aching too badly for the man to be able to do so. ”If there’s anyway I can ever by of assistance…” She very much wanted to be of use to the man but he so rarely seemed willing to take her up on the offer. Sometimes…. Sometimes it just seemed like Theofilus really didn’t think much of her at all. He obviously didn’t trust her with wotever it was Rogers seemed to be prompting him to share. She must not have proven her trustworthiness yet. She tried to keep the dejected cast from her shoulders, instead calling upon her Diamond charm yet again to help her through the conversation.
She flushed slightly as Theofilus changed the subject again and again gave a small, denying shake of her head. ”No… it’s nothing,” she denied softly. She just wanted to remain near the man. And this was her only way to do so. She had to become his perfect assistance so he’d want her.

Theofilus sighed. Was this miscommunication? Was this lack of trust? How bad of an idiot was he actually being? The sparrow shook his head in dismay at the thoughts. "I don't think you give yourself enough credit Kelasia."
Sometimes Theofilus wanted to smack himself for saying thoughts aloud, especially when he was tired. This was one of those moments. "God, I'm sorry. I must sound like a horrible person. I don't mean to be snippy or anything Kelasia. I'm just tired." He said as he downed the rest of his tea in one gulp. As he grimaced he set the cup down with a cough.
"I will ask for your help with Eilwyn," he said suddenly, "I can't do it alone. I think if I try to do it alone I'll..." He didn't finish his sentence. He couldn't say the word. Die. He would die of a broken heart if he failed the boy. Why did he fail so often?
